Submission 025

Hi Colin

Not sure if you have been following the ISAF Conference & submission 025 which sets up a revised
scoring system.
I suspect that this will be the system for all Olympic Class International & Worlds regattas
This changes the system attempted during 2005 re last day Grand Finals which was an unmitigated
disaster.

I have attached details which you may find interesting

We have yet to see how classes will respond to this & no doubt there will be masses of debate on the
internet re its merits or otherwise.
One good thing is that the results for all the previous races will still count towards determining
the medallists.
Whether 'weighting' the last race will achieve anything, only time will tell.

If the attachment is not available via sailwave, details are available on
http://www.sailing.org/default.asp?ID=j19Fh0,C2&format=popup

Regards
Ralph

Hi Ralph,

Thanks. Should it be used for any such events I think Sailwave can handle
that now, as far as I can tell...?

Regards,
Colin

Hi Colin
The one I thought might be a problem is breaking ties based upon the medal race (for top 10 boats) &
all series races on 11th to last boats.

I would guess that the regattas will still be run under AddC with Qualification & Finals flights &
THEN, the top 10 race in a Medal race.
Not sure how to set this up in SW, especially when having tie break rules for the top 10, which are
different to the rest of the fleet.

Not an urgent problem & in view of no other responses to my email, not a very relevant one either
;-))
May be an academic exercise as not sure how many 'Olympic class' organising authorities use SW.
Sod's law says that there will no doubt be another Russian exercise if we assume the above ;-(

Something to look at during the cold winter months (if you live in the Northern Hemisphere!)

Regards
Ralph

Hi Ralph,

Perhaps the problem is fleet racing itself and it's not fixable. If we
changed to match or team racing with heats and finals and simple scoring
it'd be much more accessible to the viewer and the good sailors would still
win. Or sail short courses with few boats inn heats and finals.

Colin
