I'm returning to Sailwave for my annual regatta. Downloaded 1.74 and
got the red warning about start 1. Tried 1.75 - no warning but now a
Message Box when Scoring by Fleet. It reads "Implementation problem -
result type has not been found for scored group." Yikes! Que? Click on
OK and the scoring proceeds successfully.
On to my annual whine - printing on paper for on-the-wall regatta
results. We now have every type of scoring so that granny can race
every second Saturday in a different boat and be successfully scored
but we still have to deal with the joys of IE to print. So we want to
print on legal paper? It has to be told each time we print. So try
Word. Setup default margins, landscape orientation, legal paper size.
Word remembers it - amazing! But not when I try to import Sailwave
output, it gets a senior moment and I get portrait letter size. Wastes
my time.
In all the years I have snivelled about this nobody has been able to
tell me how to print to paper easily. Html is fine when I upload to
the Club's website, no problemo. But print to paper? It is no problem
if I use a very small font - one can get 15 races on letter in
landscape. But nobody can read it. "What do all you happy ODs do?" I
ask plaintively.

Hi Donald,
Forgetting Sailwave for a moment, if you had a huge table in excel and the
same table in explorer, what does excel do that explorer doesn't such that
printing from excel is satisfactory? is it the fact that you can just print
some of the cells for example...? Having identified a satisfactoru solution
I can think about whether or not I can get it into Sailwave.
What I have done in the past is fold the results from explorer such that
there are then no gaps and pin them on the board like that (as if it was one
big piece of paper).

Hi Colin
Excel allows the user to
-format the page settings (margins, print 1 page wide etc)
-change column widths,
-format cells for word wrap, point size, font, etc
and most importantly, do the formatting on the screen so that you can see how it looks before
printing
IE does not permit any of this & a double handed series (word wrapping names) in a high race series
(too many races to fit portrait), just wastes paper - the amount of white space on an IE print makes
me cringe
SW allows the user to do some element of bespoke output design but only if you know html code &
still requires trial & error to see if it fits. Each series has different publishing requirements
I know you will say that if it is too wide for IE, it must be too wide for Excel but playing around
with column width, font & fit to page
I have great frustration when there is a delay in putting results on the noticeboard because SW
users are busy exporting to Excel, formatting the data (which cannot be saved from the previous
format) - but then I always was an impatient chap
Hope this helps

I agree and Sailwave was never inteneded to be used like that. The
assumption was that at least one person in a club knew HTML, so they could
tweak an existing style sheet to the required spec, or perhaps create two;
one for printing and one for the website. Also I had hoped that the SUG
would become an kind of swap shop. I plan to address the issue in the
publishing overhaul penciled in after the next release to the web site.
I'll either bite the buller and print natively to paper or allow interactive
style sheet creation - i.e. without the need for HTML knowledge.
Colin
PS: Page margins can be set in explorer from the File+PageSetup menu.
First, Sailwave is not free. I paid up as much as for any other software package on the Club's behalf. I would expect that any user would do the same because, as you say, 90% of the program is wonderful. I do remember how much effort Colin puts in but he seems to get deflected by all these rinky dink requests to score unique events. But we shouldn't have to resort to Excel and external programs that don't work very well to publish on paper. Sailwave output overrides default settings of IE and Word. How hard is it to allow a user to play with the settings before exporting? This discussion has been going on for years without resolution. Hi Donald,
Sailwave output overrides default settings of IE
and Word. How hard is it to allow a user to play with the settings
before exporting?
Sailwave generates HTML, the HTML is then pumped into explorer or the
program of your choice and it does with it what it will. It does not
override any settings in those programs.

Of the thousands of clubs that use Sailwave, very few actually donate - 1 a
month - beer money. In fact I would like to find a way to drop the scheme
without upsetting anybody and find a mainline sponsor. Perhaps by changing
the partner list into a list of special thanks and offering money back to
those that are not happy with that. It's always more fun when it really is
free...

That frustration is minor compared to going to a regatta where they _don't_ use Sailwave (or any other software) and waiting while they type everything in to Excel and try to find all the formula errors and sort the results without scrambling the race data among all the racers.
The best part about using Sailwave is that the results come out quickly and consistently correct. Every time.

Hi Jay
This is not a dig at clubs who don't use SW.
I was trying to protect the hardworking individuals, who produce the results at our club and set
very high standards of accuracy & presentation with 'impatient' PROs like me pushing them to publish
the results.
My comments were as much a plea on their behalf rather than having a go at them.

If the output is too wide for one page (even landscape), IE tends to drop the excess, whereas Excel reliably puts it onto another page.
