Testing Version 1.47 Beta5

Our club runs a race every June called the 'Round Bowen Race which
involves a 20 mile island circumnavigation and every type of boat
you can imagine all in one massed start. Last year we had 175 boats
starting - which can be quite exciting to say the least!

In the past we have done the race scoring with a complicated
spreadsheet but would like to use Sailwave if possible and we have
been doing some tests to see if we can indeed use it this year.
This is proving to be not so easy because of some unusual features
of our race - mainly because we have several races within one race
(multihulls and dinghies which do not figure in the overall results,
and a cadre of about 60 boats who race in a regular series and who
have a different fleet structure in that series).

The approach I have been testing is to have all entries and results
in Excel and then create the necessary CSV files for loading
Sailwave files with entries and results. Two specific questions
arise:

1. When importing entries into Sailwave it allows records to be
created which do not have valid Fleets. Is there someway around this
short of editing the CSV file or editing the Sailwave file after the
data is imported? I was hoping it would ignore records which do not
have valid fleet data.
2. Is there a way of excluding some fleets (multihulls and dinghies
in our case) from the overall race results? I know fleets can have
different scoring methods but I do not see a way of excluding
selected fleets from the overall results. I have looked at handling
this with having separate races for them but this makes things
complicated and the results publication is problematic.

Thanks for your help,

Dave Pritchard,

Hi Dave,

Apologies for delay in replying.

1. When importing entries into Sailwave it allows records to be

created which do not have valid Fleets. Is there someway around this
short of editing the CSV file or editing the Sailwave file after the
data is imported? I was hoping it would ignore records which do not
have valid fleet data.<

I can't think of a way to make this happen. At this stage the fleet it just
another field in the competitor record and the user may in fact be planning
to create the fleets later so I can't really tweak it either.

2. Is there a way of excluding some fleets (multihulls and dinghies

in our case) from the overall race results? I know fleets can have
different scoring methods but I do not see a way of excluding
selected fleets from the overall results. I have looked at handling
this with having separate races for them but this makes things
complicated and the results publication is problematic.<

In its current developmental form, Sailwave can only score a series across
fleets or by fleet. I have plans to allow the data to be 'mined' in
virtually any possible way you can think of but that's a way off. Even
though all fleets are scored when scoring by fleet you can choose to just
publish one at a time which may help...? I have personally gone away from
using Sailwave in multi-fleet mode and tend to create a file per fleet. The
planned dev will eliminate this need but for now I find it more convenient,
especially since you can open N Sailwave files at any one time in the UI.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. For you immediate needs, you could try Ed
Mitchell's RaceSail program; as I understand it, its more advanced than
Sailwave WRT fleet capabilities. Wile Ed is a 'competitor' of mine, both
systems are currently free and I'd prefer you found a solution rather then
fob you off with promises of future dev. I think Ed is a member of this
group so perhaps he can reply explaining his fleet/divisional capabilities..

Regards,
Colin
