Thanks and request

Colin

Were using Sailwave (1.80) for scoring the National Schools Sailing
Association Regatta at Grafham - for the first time in earnest.

many thanks - great, useful, attractive etc etc.

Can I be really cheeky and request the following for possible
inclusion sometime (or at least consideration). I may have missed
something that tells me how to do them anyway - in which case
apologies and look forward to being put right. Hopefully the
explanations will explain my logic of the requests:-

1. Can you sort columns in descending order by clicking the column
header a second time - I know this seems perverse, but it was useful
today, for instance, to sort by PY descending so we had the order
for starting a pursuit race.

2. Could we filter the "spreadsheet" of a race - again as an
example we have 5 fleets - lasers, radials, toppers, fast and slow
handicap - all scored on one series (because we want to collate team
results etc) - if we could filter the data screen to only show one
fleet it would make finding a particular entry easier - or perhaps
filter to get a list of boat types competing in the pursuit...

3. Would it be possible to default the number of laps for a
competitor to the number of laps entered for the last competitor (or
even better have a check box to enable/disable this) - so that when
we are entering an average lap time race where the results we get
go, say, 20 boats did 4 laps, then 30 boats did 3 laps etc - we can
just enter the time and only change the number of laps when it
changes (hope this makes sense)

4. On the same theme, if in entering the results for a fleet the
data entry screen to input place/time etc could default to the last
one used (ie for entering times for average laps, always default to
the 2nd radio button) then all the data entry could be done via the
keyboard direct using tab and enter.

5. Is it possible to add, say, 20 more entries to an entry list
that's already full - rather than entering each by clicking "new"
each time. The "Edit next" checkbox is great - but if I've
misjudged the number of entries first time it would be nice to add,
in effect, a load more blank ones and then use "Edit next" to fill
in the details

6. Really picky - sorry - could the link to the burgees be relative
(ie i'd like to be able to enter something like ..\gwsc1.gif) that
is preserved in the html files - it seems to replace that with an
absolute reference to the file.

7. Even more picky - could there be any more optional fields for
competitor's data - for instance we wanted to enter ages (or dates
of birth) and sexes for hels/crews - so we can award best girl under
16 etc etc by scanning the results sheets. The means of changing
the titles of fields is great - but I came a bit unstuck by being
too clever importing the data from a csv file and putting "m" r "f"
in the ISAF columns - which immediately made (useless) hyperlinks in
the resulting html pages. I've now put them in the Boatname field -
as we used the Notes colum for querying information from competitors
like "check sail number" etc

And just an observation - on my TFT screen on a Sony Laptop (which
has a strange 1400 x 1050 res) it's almost impossible to read the
characters in the data entry boxes unless I increase them to a very
large size. My colleague using a Dell 1024 x 768 laptop has no
problems at all - I see missing and partial characters - I wonder if
the font for data entry boxes could be changed as can the font for
the main display?

So - apologies, lots of comments - none meant as criticisms. If you
could automatically ensure competitors write legibly, spell their
own names right AND put the correct sail numbers on their entry
forms that would be even better!

Regards and thanks again

Our data file is now pretty big (240 competitors, 10 races) and I
don't know if this has anything to do with it, but we have a couple
of possible bugs:-

1. The whole data entry has slowed to crawl - if I revert to 1.57
then it's no problem. The memory usage of sailwave.exe also seems
to rise over time, but again in 1.57 seems pretty level.

2. One one laptop (but not the other) we can no loger use the sail
number wizard - it just doesn't show any boats, and seems oblivious
to the number of digits chosen to be displayed. If we open the data
file on another machine all is OK? Ditto - if I revert to 1.57 on
the same machine all is OK. Strange one I agree, but quite
reproducable?

Many thanks

Tom

Hi Tom,

Can you send me the file (.blw) to colin@sailwave.com. What version are you
trying other than 1.57? Many of the interim versions were slow...

NB: Have noted other comments - will reply when have time... thls for the
feedback

Hi Colin
Would support Tom's first request (as well as the others) as I was the awkward person wanting Tom to
check my info in reverse order
Are you able to replicate what other table displays do so when you click the title, it toggles
between ascending & descending

Regards
Ralph

Hi Tim,

Apologies for delay!

1. Can you sort columns in descending order by clicking the column
header a second time - I know this seems perverse, but it was useful
today, for instance, to sort by PY descending so we had the order
for starting a pursuit race.

Added to dev plan.

Added to dev plan.

This should work already it default to the previous laps of a competitors in
the same class of boat. But i'll check it.

4. On the same theme, if in entering the results for a fleet the
data entry screen to input place/time etc could default to the last
one used (ie for entering times for average laps, always default to
the 2nd radio button) then all the data entry could be done via the
keyboard direct using tab and enter.

Should also work. You need to create a statt per fleet in each race though.
See the gtetting started notes about moving from 1.57 in the help file.

Added to dev plan.

6. Really picky - sorry - could the link to the burgees be relative
(ie i'd like to be able to enter something like ..\gwsc1.gif) that
is preserved in the html files - it seems to replace that with an
absolute reference to the file.

I'll check that; should be OK.

Done in latest release on web site.

This will be MS ClearType. Try using their ClearType tuning toy and/or in
Sailwave (Global options) you can increase the size of entry box text for
this very reason. MS recommend that clear type is not used on fonts below
10pt.

Colin
