The Best just got Better

A lot of the version changes that go on only affect a proportion of the users, so this is one for Everyone.

I wasn’t going to post a new version tonight but I got rather excited with this one so I thought I would share it and see what you think.

  • This Version has the scoring code RAF removed and replaced with RET so as to conform with the RRS 2013.
  • Changes to the Sail No Wizard
  • Fixed the “Ignore Competitors with results”, overwriting the Resolver Window.
  • You can now enter Sail numbers which match on length without them being unique. e.g. if you have sail no’s 1, 10, 100 as soon as you press the 1 all 3 appear and you can’t press enter you have to select one of them with the mouse or the down arrow key. Now you can just type 1 [Enter] or 10 [Enter]
  • You can now put an “" in the Sail No box and it populates with all the remaining Sail no’s then type in the resolver box to select the one you require. This can also now be a partial Sail No. How many times have you a sheet with something like ?57 - This will find it. Or a results sheet with a name such as “Brian” (Of course you are meant to know Brian’s sail number of by heart) now just put an "” in the Sailno Box and type “brian” in the resolver - Bingo!!
  • For the Class racing with the long list of numbers to enter and sometimes you press the enter only once and start putting the sail no into the position (I Don’t believe you if you say you haven’t done it). Now enter the Sail no and press the “+” key that’s the big one next to the enter key on the numeric keyboard. That’s it, single key to enter and the next position is entered. You can still press the enter key twice if you prefer and you will of course need to press the enter key if you want to enter a code. Or if you are entering times.
    Have fun testing it

Jon

A reminder that the other new scoring code for 2013 is DPI - Discretionary Penalty Imposed.

Even though you told us it wouldn't work, I looked in a existing series. When I create a new series I see Colin added a "DPI1" code, very similar to the new code.

Hi Art,

Where did you get the "Even though you told us it wouldn't work" I don't think it was me, but if it was I apologise, because Colin had already put this in and I for one have used it at some events this year and it works fine. Which is why I haven't made any changes to it.

Hi - Sorry to post this a second time but although the first one was readable on the PC for some reason trying to read it on my iPad some of the message was missing something to do with the html formatting, and as no-one has commented on the Sail no Wizard maybe they didn’t see it either. I haven't checked but I thought I saw something somewhere (maybe it wasn't you) about the new RET code not showing up in old scoring files. That same would obviously be true for the new DPI1 code as well but I just wasn't thinking about that when I first checked for it so when I didn't see it I thought it hadn't been implemented yet.

Two "by the way" comments:

1. There doesn't seem to be a single list of changes anywhere that puts in one place all the changes from each version as you go along. That might be a good idea as you often see that on the websites for downloadable software.

2. I had not realized until this came up that it is not possible to completely "upgrade" an existing scoring file without reentering some of the data in some way. In other words, I guess I thought that if I opened an old Sailwave series in the newest version of Sailwave I would get everything current to the new version. The workaround seems to be to merge an old saved series into a new series but then I have to reenter all the race and scoring and publishing parameters as all that comes in are the competitors and finish times and scoring codes. Not sure what I think of that but it apparently makes testing new versions of the software more work than I thought it would be. Maybe there is a better workaround I haven't figured out yet.

Hi Art,

Yes it was me - You won’t get the new codes if you are using an old .blw file. This is really what you need as it would not work if your scoring system had a RET and all the results used RAF. Sailwave is design specifically to make the .blw portable so that an old file can still be scored with a newer program. This is all explained on the Sailwave Website at http://www.sailwave.com/concepts. However if you are using an old file as a Template you can edit the RAF to RET and probably change finished to No.

  1. I’ve been listing changes against each beta version with the intention of then making a list of all the changes when the next full install is created. So once we don’t have many changes happening and a few of you have reported back that they are happy with the changes then I’ll create a new install based on that version.

Perhaps once you are all happy with the publishing changes and the sail no wizard I’ll create a new install, with a list of changes since the previous installer.

  1. For testing I think there are 2 things to be done. a) Check it works with your existing .blw editing the scoring codes if you want - you can put both RAF and RET in the codes. b) check if you make a new file the correct codes are generated.

Hello Jon and Collin,

You are so fast with your beta-versions, that there is no time to test them all ...
I'll wait a few more days with updating of the German locale (Dierk - für Version 2.6.0 war sie schon fertig ...).
Till now I didn't test version 2.6.2 and the new posibilities to modifiy the tables. But in the old java script template versions (i.e. 2.5.2), I could translate the "at" of the headers of the race tables. With the actual versions (tested till 2.6.1) I do not succeed.

Thanks for Your fast, great work!

regards

Christof

Jon,

My point about the changes was that for many downloadable programs there is a list of changes for each version for the last few versions (say last 2-4 years worth). That makes sense to me. For betas, one doesn't normally expect there to be a cumulative list of changes. My comment was about the regular releases, not betas.

On the website, you asked for comments on Colin's translation stuff. I haven't tried every one of them but the ones I tried worked just fine. Good way to implement translations. I had two comments, which I made earlier:

1. The "Fleet" word is not included in the translation stuff. Colin responded that that came from how you scored the series. What he didn't say (at least not specifically) is that if you score by "Fleet" you can change "Fleet" in the published results simply by changing the name of the column on the main view. You will still see "Fleet" when choosing how to score, but your column title will be used instead on the published pages. [You cannot leave the column name blank as it will default to "Fleet" automatically. If you put the HTML code for a blank space here [&#32;] then when you publish you will get that code instead of "Fleet" and it won't be visible on your published HTML pages. Of course, your column will have a weird title in the main view but that is a workaround to suppress the printing of "Fleet" in your titles.]

2. It would be nice to be able to use a double quote (") in the translation stuff. The reason is for use of custom <span> tags where the recommended way to input the class value is with double quotes [i.e., <span class="start">some text</span>]. In VBA, this can be done by putting two double quotes ("") when you want one double quote in the string as opposed to terminating the string definition. (Use of single quotes (') can work also but isn't the preferred method; so, there is a workaround available.)

Art

PS - One thought that arose from my comment #1 - it would be nice to see the custom name of columns when choosing how to score and elsewhere (if that happens elsewhere). In the dropdown list for scoring you could have "Fleet|Custom" if your "Fleet" column had a custom name of "Custom." Not critical but might be helpful.

everything current to the new version. The workaround seems to be to
merge an old saved series into a new series but then I have to reenter
all the race and scoring and publishing parameters as all that comes in
are the competitors and finish times and scoring codes. Not sure what I
think of that but it apparently makes testing new versions of the
software more work than I thought it would be. Maybe there is a better
workaround I haven't figured out yet.

Hi Art,

Where did you get the "Even though you told us it wouldn't work" I don't

think it was me, but if it was I apologise, because Colin had already put
this in and I for one have used it at some events this year and it works
fine. Which is why I haven't made any changes to it.

When I create a new series I see Colin added a "DPI1" code, very similar
to the new code.

A reminder that the other new scoring code for 2013 is DPI -
Discretionary Penalty Imposed.

A lot of the version changes that go on only affect a proportion of

I wasn't going to post a new version tonight but I got rather excited
with this one so I thought I would share it and see what you think.

* This Version has the scoring code RAF removed and replaced with RET

so as to conform with the RRS 2013.
* Changes to the Sail No Wizard

* Fixed the "Ignore Competitors with results", overwriting the
Resolver Window.
* You can now enter Sail numbers which match on length without them

being unique. e.g. if you have sail no's 1, 10, 100 as soon as you
press the 1 all 3 appear and you can't press enter you have to select
one of them with the mouse or the down arrow key. Now you can just

type

1 [Enter] or 10 [Enter]
* You can now put an "*" in the Sail No box and it populates with all

the remaining Sail no's then type in the resolver box to select the

one

you require. This can also now be a partial Sail No. How many times

have you a sheet with something like ?57 - This will find it. Or a
results sheet with a name such as "Brian" (Of course you are meant to
know Brian's sail number of by heart) now just put an "*" in the

Sailno

Box and type "brian" in the resolver - Bingo!!
* For the Class racing with the long list of numbers to enter and

sometimes you press the enter only once and start putting the sail no
into the position (I Don't believe you if you say you haven't done

it).

Now enter the Sail no and press the "+" key that's the big one next

to

the enter key on the numeric keyboard. That's it, single key to enter
and the next position is entered. You can still press the enter key
twice if you prefer and you will of course need to press the enter

key

if you want to enter a code. Or if you are entering times.
Have fun testing it
Jon
