The perenial publishing problem

Hi Colin: I've learned something about this HTML thingy. It doesn't
sound too bright and sounds as if Microsoft must have had a hand in
it. Imagine how well computers could work if Bill Gates had never got
involved. Dreadful programmer, good marketer.
One comment about the Edit Competitor page. Having the boxes filled
with "Boat 1" or "Competitor 1" etc IS a nuisance because when I want
to fill in my data I have to delete "Boat 1" and fill in Ean Mara or
delete "Competitor 1" and fill in Donald Wyllie. It isn't very
important but it is a time waster. Would be nice if the "Boat 1"
disappeared as soon as I clicked the cursor in the box to fill in
details. Having a guide as to what goes in a box is a bit useful but
only the first time you use the program. After that, as I say, it is a
time waster. In my case registration closes at 11:00am and I have two
hours to get all the competitor data in before the first race results
are radiod in. So anything that slows me down causes an increase in
blood pressure!
I solved my logo problem by not having logos in the printout. I had
just copied last year's file to the new computer and 1.56. Probably
that Bill Gates thingy again, not to worry.
Remember, when people like me whine, the program is better than
anything else out there.
Bye, Donald

Hi Donald,

I'll do blank entries in 1.57 and see how it goes. For now, instead of
click on a field - use the Tab key to tab to the field - this will leave the
data highlighted so you can just type and the existing data is automatically
deleted. I've probably alwaus assumed this mode.

Regards,
Colin J

Assuming you are in the edit competitor window (double click on the
competitor to get there), instead of clicking in the box you are about to
enter (like boat name), use the tab key to get there. Then the data that's
already in the field will be highlighted and will be replaced with whatever
you type without deleting it first. And you don't have to keep moving from
keyboard to mouse.

Thank you Will and Colin. Tabbing is a big help, I will be able to
relax tomorrow and get the data entry done in record time. I wonder
what other features there are like this that I don't know about?
Thanks, Donald

Hi Donald,

Tabbing like that is standard windoze feature, you should find it works in
all apps. You can also use the hot key to get to a field in one keystroke
instead on N tabs - for example if you look at the "Crew" text in
Edit+Competitor you'll see that the "w" is underlined - so "w" is the hot
key for "Crew" - this means if you press Alt+w the crew field will be
highlighted as if you had tabbed to it - so you can start typing the crew
name. Ditto the other fields and buttons. When you get used to it, using
the keyboard is *much* faster than using the mouse. Hot keys are a standard
Windoze feature as well that most apps adhere to. You'll probably find
Sailwave has some missing and conflicting hot keys which I try and sort out
as I notice them.

Colin J
