The Perennial - Publishing

Hi Colin: Just setting up Sailwave for the annual regatta and my usual
list of problems show up.
1. Why are bits of competitor data filled in? E.g. It comes up
Competitor 1 or Boat 1 and so on. It wastes time to have to delete
this before entering the real data. Why not have competitor data areas
blank?
2. Publishing to Word - lets not talk about why I do it! But Sailwave
output always ignores my Word and printer settings and has the output
in portrait orientation. But it is better to come up in landscape to
get 10 or so races across a page. Why does it override my settings?
3. I'm using 1.56 now. On previous versions my gif's and jpeg's worked
perfectly in the output. But in this version half the logos are cut
off. I can manipulate the boxes to get them to appear but don't have
time 'cos I publish every fleet separately.
Sorry to be a pain for I know you devote huge anmounts of time to this
excellent program. But for two years I have harped on about publishing
inadequacies - and others support this view. But nothing is done. Why
is fixing publishing problems not a priority? It is the major flaw in
this program.
Bye, Donald

Hi Donald,

I feel your pain. It is frustrating this end too, only having a limited
amount of time to develop Sailwave...

1. Why are bits of competitor data filled in? E.g. It comes up
Competitor 1 or Boat 1 and so on. It wastes time to have to delete
this before entering the real data. Why not have competitor data areas
blank?

They used to be blank (my preference too) on creating a new series but it
seemed to cause confusion. The nominal names like 'boat 1' give the user
some context. It should not effect you at all though. If you don't want to
see one of those columns at all you can hide it and if you are using one of
columns, the data will get overwritten anyway. Why are you deleting them..?

2. Publishing to Word - lets not talk about why I do it! But Sailwave
output always ignores my Word and printer settings and has the output
in portrait orientation. But it is better to come up in landscape to
get 10 or so races across a page. Why does it override my settings?

 It's not. Sailwave always creates a HTML file when it publishes. The
goal is that eventually this will be formatted to exactly the users' tastes.
But at present because of the inbuilt formatting limitations, I introduced
the option to feed that HTML file to Word/Excel etc after creating it.
Sailwave itself has nothing to do with what Word does with the HTML file.
To show this do the following - publish from Sailwave into a HTML file;
close Sailwave. Open the HTML file and look at it with notepad - it's just
plain HTML; no media controls (although it could do with some) and nothing
about Word etc; close notepad. Start Word and open that HTML file with it -
print the file - the options will be exactly the same as if Sailwave had
started Word for you; that's all Sailwave is doing; starting Word.

3. I'm using 1.56 now. On previous versions my gif's and jpeg's worked
perfectly in the output. But in this version half the logos are cut
off. I can manipulate the boxes to get them to appear but don't have
time 'cos I publish every fleet separately.

Can you send me the series and the images and any tweaked templates that you
use so that I can look at it for you. As far as I know there are no
intrinsic problems in this area with 1.56.

Sorry to be a pain for I know you devote huge amounts of time to this
excellent program. But for two years I have harped on about publishing
inadequacies - and others support this view. But nothing is done. Why
is fixing publishing problems not a priority? It is the major flaw in
this program.

It is a priority (I would dearly love to justify improving things now -
today), but a bigger priority are things that Sailwave cannot do at all...

Have you looked at the development plan?

www.sailwave.com?page=devplan

What's your *single* biggest arrrgh with publishing; I'll try and do it
sooner than the dev plan states.

PS: does anybody (Alistair?) know of a dedicated HTML printing tool - i.e.
something that takes a HTML file and prints it in useful ways with
intelligent multi-page control of width etc...? Other than Word! The CSS2
media controls cannot control tables very well (at all?).

Regards,
Colin

HI Folks,

I've had a query from the results team for the 2004 Dragon Gold Cup, which
is being held here in Falmouth for the next week, regarding dead heats over
a series.
They want the series to show dead heats once the points have been totalled,
but not to keep going with a place count until a result separation is found,
ie, if the first two boats in a the series are equal after counting the
points for the whole series then joint winners are declared.
Is it possible to do this within sailwave? If so could someone tell me how,
please? It only just been dropped in my lap and racing starts tomorrow :o(
Cheers
Keith

Hi Colin

A small question for adding competiors. As far as Ive seen there is a
limitation on adding one competitor and one crew. This might be perfect
for single and dual handed racing - but in international championships
for other yachts I would love to have a possibillity to add several
crewmembers. Example is the world championship in x-99
http://www.x99.info/deutsch/Endergebnis1.html

Last year Finland (helsinki YC) were hosting the Europeans of Melges 24
http://www.melges.org/europeans2003/ and they did use the Sailwave for
scoring. Is there any way of adding several competitors to a entry?

When stressing this - maybe a cange of interface would help. For many
races (most I assume) BoatName and Helm is satisfying. What there were a
button for adding crewmembers when needed (the field is almost the same
as Helm). Then there might be possible to enter unlimited crewmembers of
any boat (would be great for x-99 championships or Melges 24).

Hi Hvard,

I will do something about it when doing the publishing changes due to be
done soon. You can enter multiple names now up to the field size of crew
and help fields. If you embed HTML, you can add new lines between the
members, e.g. crew: Joe<br>Fred<br>George.

Colin

Hi Hvard,

While the field name are something like "crew" you can can in fact put as mnay folk in here as possible. To get them on separate lines in teh results separate them with <br>. This will look odd on scren but OK in the results. I have plans for a crew tab with a list of names and links, email addresses, etc etc in the future.

Colin
