Hi. I am having a problem with discard formats . I read the help files and it suggests the format 1,1,1,2,2,2 etc

Where do I enter this info? also is there a facility for sailwave to suggest revised PY handicaps based on past results?

Hi Dave

Click on Scoring System in the toolbar and select the series scoring tab

Unfortunately, SW cannot deal with PY amendments

You will be best following the RYA scheme for calculating local PYs, using a spreadsheet

Dave,

With regard to rating assessment there is something called BCR (Back Calculated Rating) which is the rating each boat would need to have to come equal first on on corrected time. Sailwave does not currently analyse according to the method laid out in the RYA publication YR2.

FYI - new in build 11 is the facility to make a return of each race raw data for each boat for analysis by the RYA according to the methods laid out in the aforementioned YR2. This scheme is in trial at present with a scheduled wider information dissemination to all RYA clubs late this year or early next year.

The scheme if proven successful will provide after sufficient data has been received from a club a set of PY rating numbers for that club for the classes sailed at the club. The RYA scheme may in the future even be able to provide a Personal Handicap rating for individual boats at club

So watch this space with regard to both Sailwave having more functionality with regard to calculating local ratings and also the RYA scheme for getting more race result data to analyse.

Kind regards,

Huw

I have attached the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club’s Sailwave scoring guide, it is still a work in progress so may have a few typos, but it should answer a few questions for you. Due to Sailwave’s flexibility there is usually more than one way to solve a scoring problem, so the way we solve a particular scoring problem might be different to others.

If you see any problems, have additions or corrections, please send them to me so I can revise the document.

How do I set up discards?

Lets say that in a 6 race series the sailing instruction allow one discard when at least 3 races have been sailed and 2 discards when at least 5 races have been sailed. You can setup a discard profile in Sailwave to specify these rules. A discard profile is a list of the number of discards allowed when at least 1,2,3,4… races have been sailed. The discard profile for the above sailing instructions would therefore be 0,0,1,1,2,2.

You can set up the discard profile from the Edit+ScoringSystem menu item. Sailwave automatically applies the correct number of discards when scoring the series based on the number of races sailed.

Note that you can safely leave gaps in the races sailed without any side effects; i.e. if race 4 (say) is not sailed you can just leave its column of results blank; it will not be included when counting the number of races sailed. When using multiple fleets you can set a different discard profile for each fleet from the Edit+Fleets menu item.

In addition to the method above, the discard profile can be an expression using the following variables:-

s - the number of races in the series that have been sailed.
r - the total number of races in the series.

Examples:-

s * 0.75
(s-1) * 0.8
s - 2
r / 4

If the expression evaluates to more than s at any time, then a value of s is assumed; hopefully your expressions will not let that happen! If the expression evaluates to a negative result, then 0 is assumed.

Using an expression is useful for long series, or, two or more series that have been merged.
