HI, I have a query about tie-breaks in a long series
Low scoring with DNC excluded.
The question is, which races should be included in tie-break calculations
a) is it ALL scores from both boats, (including races when they did not sail against each other)
b) scores only from races where both boats sailed in the SAME race i.e. actually competed against each other?
e.g. & 2 results in races 1…10 ( using ‘-’= DNC)
Boat 1: 1 3 2 3 - - - - - - Series Score = 9
Boat 2: - - 1 3 2 3 - - - - Series Score = 9
Should the tie-break compare ALL races, or just the 2 races where BOTH boat 1 & 2 competed against each other?
Thanks
Hi Chris,
The way Sailwave breaks series ties is documented in Racing Rules of Sailing Appendix A A8 and is as follows:
A8 SERIES TIES
A8.1 If there is a series-score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s
race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first
point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour
of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be
used.
A8.2 If a tie remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in
order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be
broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so
on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some
of them are excluded scores.
Kind regards,
Huw
Yes, thank you Huw, I had read A8.
So does Boat 2 win with 3 points in race 6 of 10, because Boat 1 did not sail and threfore has no score ?
Or does RRS A8.2 only apply if DNC’s are scored, (since then race 6 would be DNC vs 3 and boat 2 wins , this assuming DNC > 3
Hi Chris,
It is not your option a) or option b).
Your option b) is not a part of RRS A8 but the event / series NoR and / or SI’s could have changed the requirement to break series ties to be your option b).
RRS A8.1 is all non excluded races for both competitors including races where they did not sail against each other. i.e. it is not ALL scores for both boats.
Using the data you supplied and applying A8.1 gives scores as follows:
Boat 1: 1,2,3,3
Boat 2: 1,2,3,3
So cannot be broken according to A8.1, so need to apply A8.2 including excluded / discards so scores for all races
So moving on to use RRS A8.2 using information listed
Boat 1: 1 3 2 3 - - - - - - Series Score = 9
Boat 2: - - 1 3 2 3 - - - - Series Score = 9
The series tie is broken in favour of Boat2 as they have a 3 in race 6 whereas Boat1 has a dash (DNC).
I hope that helps.
Kind regards,
Huw
Yes Huw! that helps a lot, thanks
I think it was excluding (and not showing DNC) on results that was confusing me!
This leads to the interesting conclusion, in this example, that If boat 2 had sailed the very last race 10, and scored anything better than DNC, he would have won the series!
Hi Chris,
Thanks for letting me know the reply was helpful.
I think you mean Boat1 and if they had sailed in any of races 7, 8, 9 or 10 and got any recorded finish position they would have had the tie broken in their favour.
Depending on if the NoR and / or the SI’s have stated that RRS A5.3 is being used Boat1 could still have won if they went out started the race and then retired.
Sailwave should be showing DNC’s in the series results.
Kind regards,
Huw
Yeah, I meant Boat 1 - brain clog.
