Total Elapsed Time

Hi Colin,

This is a strange one to be sure, but I thought I'd throw it out there, and
see if you have any guidance:

Our club has an annual event where we use PHRF TOT for most of the awards,
but there are a couple that are calculated differently.

For these awards, all of a boats elapsed times in the series are added
together. The lowest Total Elapsed Time in a fleet wins the award. In the
past, this has been done by hand, and usually takes us quite a while, with
several double-checks post-series. I've not found a way to calculate this
automatically in Sailwave, but perhaps you can think of a way?

The other options I've come up with are: Export data from Sailwave, and
calculate it in Excel, or maybe a Python script. The problem with excel is
that we enter "Finish Times", not "Elapsed Times", and so I would have to
export both the Start Times, and the Elapsed Times for each race, and then
calculate the difference. Since Sailwave exports in the format: 123456,
rather than 12:34:56, Excel has a bit of a problem figuring out how to
properly calculate the Elapsed Time through subtraction, since it just
treats 123456 as 123,456. Does this make sense, or am I articulating
poorly?

The problem with the python option is that now I'm creating new code that I
have to support. Before too long, I'd probably have a user-group full of
people asking me silly questions like this one.

Any help, or suggestions you can give are greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Pat

Hi Pat,

You can do it in silwavew - have a look at the option in a start record -
specifcally the ones that say 'the elapsed times for this race are the total
of the elapsed times from these races' - i.e. get your series - add another
race and set it up so that the elapsed times for that race are the total of
the other races. Then set each of the initial races as 'discard me first'
and set a discarde profile to discard all but one race.
