ubuntu

I’ve just installed ubuntu (painless) so I can try
stuff. The UI is beautiful compared to windows.

Seen the light at last eh Colin!! I have Wine installed for those irritating times that i need to use windows programs, hmmm, Sailwave and CSVedit for spreadsheet work including duplicate record removing from databases.

Which flavour of Ubuntu?

You discovered that clicked buttons kind of go missing in sailwave yet?

So how long till you decide to drop all that window$ proprietary stuff and re-write sailwave in something that can run natively in linux?

flavour - i dunno - i just went to ubuntu.com and
downloaded it… i used to contract out writing csh/bash scripts so
i’m looking forward to seeing a decent shell again…

unfortunately the development system i use cannot target unix - it
would mean a complete rewrite…

Hmmmm, not sure, have you set the win ver to WinXP in wine? Certainly I
don’t get what i think you’re saying, i think!

I do get some button disappearing but going mouse over restores it…
see “score” button below. Not a huge problem though!

Also not seen that happening. Running wine 1.1.7 and winecfg is set to use XP, screen res 96dpi, window manager decorates windows, window manager controls windows. All pretty much out of the box wine settings I think.

Have you got some souped up graphics functions on your board?

Sounds like you are running 'pure' Ubuntu rather tha Kubuntu or Xbuntu etc. I swap between them all as they all have their nice features. Today I'm on XUbuntu last week was on Kubuntu and both ran Sailwave fine with no lines, but can't see that pure would cause any issues either.

So I understand. I realise thats a MAJOR piece of work for a very small community - but there is potential there for that community to then be able to build the application even bigger and better? (if thats possible) - i.e. to support the addition of feaures that you just don't have time to do some daft geek could then add it themselves as it could be more easily open sourced... and recompiled. Just got to keep trying

Hi Colin, sorry can’t get what you get.

In the absence of any other useful help maybe the Wine Forums could help…

Colin,

I’m currently on Ubuntu Intrepid (8.10), with wine 1.01

and SW works fine (even basic 2.02)

I presume you have tried some wine config setting changes? By default, I have a setting for Graphics - allow the window manager to decorate the windows (another to control the windows).

Could it be that you need to install the msttcorefonts or something like
that?

Guessing it may be calling MS Sans Serif for the text boxes? And maybe
thats not installed? (Or if it is isn't available to wine)

Can any other windows apps access text fields? (wine notepad and hit F3?)

I got the same problem in Mac OS X 10.5.8 and (a fully paid) CrossOver. When I tested the combination 4 month ago everything worked fine. See http://www.codeweavers.com/support/tickets/browse/?ticket_id=757503 .

I hope they find some solution.

Aha - this at least points in the direction of some diagnostics.
Quoting from the linked discussion:

Have you tried adding the 'Core Fonts' package to your bottle?

Thanks, but unfortunately this did not help. I got 35 new *.tff files
in c:/windows/fonts, but no *.fon files and also none of them match
the names (below) which are missing.

On my Ubuntu Wine install where this works fine there are no *.fon files
in C:/windows/fonts either. ***BUT*** they do appear in this folder:

/usr/share/wine/fonts

I'm noit quite sure how my fonts got there - a package installer will
have dropped them there for me i suspect

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts
is alwasy a possibility
