Use of Aliasing .

We have two fleets of One design boats, and the results are getting predictable, and certain sailors who do not get into the top half of the results are beginning to lose interest.

The club wants to create a Gold and Silver fleet within each Class, my thoughts are that if we could possibly use Aliasing to capture the results of the same races but apply a TCF to those in the Aliased Fleet it may help to create a two tier fleet.

Fist question how to configure and Aliased fleet, second question will this plan work?

Thanks You

John

I’m not the expert on the topic, but what you ask is similar to what I did for our club this year. Things were fairly predictable under our PHRF scoring, and we were looking to get interest from others that maybe don’t have the same skills, but still have a chance at finishing decently, or at least closer. This is when I found the RYA NHC scoring system, and then found Sailwave to score it.

I’ll take a stab at remembering how to set it up:

Edit > New Competitor Aliasing

Add appropriate boats

Then go into Scoring System, Fleets tab

Add “New Fleet” (or a new fleet for every previous fleet)

For each of those new fleets, edit them, changing the Rating system appropriately

Hi John

There is a short video on setting up Aliases available here http://www.screencast.com/t/EAwpgCSBB

There is no sound but it does show you the steps necessary to create the aliases.

John,

Chad has given you a good start.

In addition you will need to go into steup – user interface, and then select competing alias ( about 4th up from the bottom in 2.19.8)

You will also need to create an extra race before scoring to accept the new handicap.

Consider setting the new ratings column to show on screen and publish as well.

As your fleet is a one design you can start with a TCF of 1, or you could create Alias on historical data, and calculate NHC results, then use the ratings values generated as a starting point.

I first started working out a handicap rating using similar maths to the NHC in the 70’s but did it for the start of each new series. The NHC system allows a new rating for each race.

In my current club we exclude the trophy winners from receiving handicap trophies. This procedure forms part of the NoR and SI’s.

I have found the tools – set competitor field, a very handy tool.

My experience with Sailwave is the limits are the limits of my immigration.

Have fun and enjoy your sailing

···

From my impression the NHC system works towards giving individuals a chance of winning an individual race rather than a regatta/series.

Chad, Jon & John,

Thanks for the great help in getting this going… i will spend some time now learning how to use this to see how it will help us.

Thanks

John

Ok,

When using RYA NHC for the Aliased fleet I have an option to specify Internal or External, i assume this is an external Spread sheet? but how to i specify where it is etc, and why would i use Internal or External, what are the benefits of each option please?

thx

John W

Only use external if you want to see how the calculations are done or you want to modify the rules or parameters.
If you use external it defaults to the same rules as the internals but you need to have excel installed to use it.

Hi John,

Internal mode is faster and is hard-wired so no change to
calculation algorithms is possible by end user such as yourself;
only Jon can make changes as and when the RYA notify him of ny
calculation changes.

External mode uses and external Microsoft Excel
spreadsheet template [SWNHC3.xls], which is located in the
Sailwave data\templates folder. This Excel file does the same
calculations as internal mode but you are able to see the
calculation algorithms. If you are so minded you could use the
file as template for creating your own club specific progressive
handicap system as some have already done.

The choice is yours, but initially probably use internal mode.

Kind regards,

Huw
