Using Dropbox for Sailwave

This is sorta related to Sailwave. The Race Committee here at Vallarta Yacht Club all use an online storage system called Dropbox. Among many other things, we keep our Sailwave files there including ratings, competitors, templates and styles. We share the same Sailwave files among us.

When you install the Dropbox software on your computer (Linux, Windows or Mac) a local folder is created called "Dropbox". The difference is that if you put anything there, it is immediately uploaded to secure cloud storage on the Internet. You can share your folders - in our case the Race Committee shares one folder that has all our Sailwave files. If I change something in my dropbox folder, the same changed file is downloaded automatically to the shared dropbox folders of the rest of the race committee. You can take your laptop offshore, score a series, and when you bring it back and connect to the internet, everyone's folders get updated. The folders are also available online, so I can sit down at one of our club's cyber cafe computers and access the files if I need to.

You can't imagine how much time this has saved us, and how much confusion it has eliminated with file versions and other things. No more running around with thumb drives!

Anyway, I thought I'd pass it along to the group. Dropbox will give you 2GB free - we have found that is more than enough for what we need. Hopefully you will find it as useful as we have. Here's a link: http://db.tt/NQvTpO8 (or http://www.dropbox.com).
