Using SWPH for two factor rating

Hi,

SW does not support the two factor rating system (e.g. ORC Club). I think with some modifications SWPH could be a multipurpose tool for swapping data SW -> Excel ->SW for supplementing SW features that are missing or under development.

Example: After the sailed race/fleet Starting times and Finish times are read to Excel using the SWPH, Corrected times are calculated in Excel using two boat specific rating factors and then Corrected times for boats of this race/fleet are written back to SW using SWPH. In this case one race/fleet specific rating factor ( = Corrected time/Elapsed time) should also be written back, which guarantees that Corrected times for these boats are calculated correctly later after clicking Rescore for calculation of other races/fleets with ratings systems included in SW.

Do you have better ideas for managing the ORC Club rule (c=r1*e-r2*d) using the existing rating system? I think the coefficients A and B are race specific, not boat specific.

Heikki,

I thought Sailwave did support performance line scoring, which is used
by IMS, Americap, ORR and ORC Club. That is where you have an A and B
and the formula is CT=(A*ET)-(B*Dist). However, I think you might be
right that Sailwave cannot do that.

The A and B rating numbers are specific to each boat (I guess that is
obvious but I thought it worth mentioning). They won't change from race
to race.

Sailwave says that it does A and B scoring BUT I think that is only when
the A and B factors are the same for every boat. You could do that
anyway by simply writing a custom scoring system that uses the actual
numbers instead of A and B (the A/B capability does make it possible to
use wind-indexed A and B factors, though I've never heard of anyone
doing that).

I suggest that Jon and Colin implement the ability to do performance
line scoring. I would guess this is used more than some of the other
stuff that Sailwave already does. I shouldn't think it would be too hard
to implement using rating files since it would simply be a matter of
pulling two rating numbers instead of one. It might be slightly more
difficult to update the screen for competitor info to allow manual input.

I thought Jon's SWPH stuff was limited to importing and exporting
ratings, not results. He said you could easily adopt it to pulling
Sailwave data into Excel but I don't think he said anything about going
the other way. I think that might be difficult as "Corrected Time" is
not something that can be edited in Sailwave now. So, importing
"Corrected Time" might be problematic without a major rewrite of code. I
should think it would be much easier to simply provide for a scoring
system with multiple rating numbers.

Hi Art,

I agree with you totally. The ideal solution is adding a new rating factor in the boat data instead of one rating factor "r". If two factors are available in the custom rating formula, the solution should be in line with the existing rating system.

I give my vote to the improvement made by you. The Rating system tab includes many apparent alternatives, but the rule itself is same, c=r*e. Decreasing the number of alternatives and developing custom rating rule should give a more flexible rating system to the users.

Is it realistic to get this modification to SW?

(My suggestion to change SWPH based on the idea that changin SWPH is easier and quicker than SW. I am happy if I am wrong.)
