Using the BCR for a fun series

Every club has a fun series. In the past we knock the top three boat’s rating and lift the bottom three boat’s rating, thus trying to bring the fleet together.

With the BCR calculation in Sailwave we are thinking about changing the ratings to the BCR for the next race in the series. This should work good for us as the series is sailed at a time of the year where the conditions are very consistent. Theoretically after a few races, because of the consistent conditions, finishes should get real close.

My question: “Is there a check box somewhere I have not seen that will set this to happen automatically, or will we just have to change the next race rating manually for each boat”? I noticed on the Scoring System -> Rating System tab, the Back Corrected %. I don’t think that does what I want. We only have about 20 boats in 2 classes so it’s not that big of a task.Volunteers like short cuts and we always try to make it easy for volunteers to get on board.

We had our first meeting of volunteers to show them the program and it was received well. We had many questions and were able to answer 98%. We are on target to use Sailwave as our new scoring system. I should have video’d it because we used the big screen to output the laptop and we had other laptops with SW for hands on.

Re: images in emails

Two possibilities (there may be others):

1. You are viewing the email message and not an embedded webpage. Or,

2. Your email viewer is set to not display images (for security reasons).

1.

There is a standard for emails and it doesn't include images. However,
following on a lead from Microsoft many email programs generate and send
a parallel version of the email message formatted as a webpage (I
believe it is technically an attachment but viewers display it instead
of the actual email message).

Most email viewers allow for viewing the webpage instead of the
standards-compliant email message and some are configured to view (and
send) those webpages as the default (usually with a standard email
message but very rarely without any email message at all!). If you
cannot see images then your email viewer probably isn't set to view
embedded webpages instead of the email message. That should give you
enough information to google on how to change the configuration for your
email viewer to view embedded webpages when they are present. [In
Thunderbird, to view embedded webpages open an email message and go to
View>Message Body As and pick either Original HTML or Simple HTML; the
setting is sticky so will apply to all email messages you open until you
change it.]

2.

In addition, email viewers often have a setting that needs to be checked
for the viewing of images. Image files CAN contain computer viruses,
although that is not the preferred method of deliver and I believe
getting infected that way is definitely not common. As a consequence,
some email programs have the default for the switch set to NOT view
images (or to not view images that are not embedded in the email and
capable of being scanned by antivirus software on the mail server). If
you still cannot see images after enabling the viewing of embedded
webpages then that is probably the issue. You should be able to google
on how to change the setting for your email viewer.

Hope that helps.

Hi Dave,

It doesn’t look like there had been an answer to your first part of the question.

There is on the Tools menu - Assign personal handicaps…

Inline images 1

Inline images 2

So you could use this

Alternatively but a bit more complicated to set up although in use it would be more automatic - you could use the NHC feature in external mode where you create your own template with the rules you wish to use.

Re the last question. The forum doesn’t handle embedded images very well if you have the email notification so that you get the emails as they come in then they do have the full images. It seems that when you have the summary only they are not always present.

Hope that helps
