v1.40 - inserting into race

Hi,

I am playing with the program in order to learn how to use it. I can't figure out how can I do the following:

- I just entered the results of the race and figured out that by error i did not enter the result of one of the boats (or that I have to correct the placement of one of the boats). Suppose that I have to place the boat at position 10. I'd expect that the boat which was at position 10 before would move to position 11 and, of course, all the boats behind it would move one place as well. But, this is not what I am getting. I just end up having two boats at position 10 - and of course having to manually correct n-10 boats, which is not very nice if there are 100 boats in fleet and one is pressured for time. I am practically sure that this is not normal and that it is almost sure that I am missing something here ...

Can somebody show me the errors of my way  ?

Regards,
Vladimir

Hi Vladimir,

Greeting from Sunny Wales, well actually it's not that Sunny but Spring is
in the air; just. How's the weather in Slovenia?

You have quickly tracked down a long established hole within Sailwave - it's
nothing you're doing wrong! This is something I want to address under the
'consolidation' programme; it's not trivial to automate because two boats
tied for a recorded 10th place (with a missing 11th) is a valid result...
The reason the facility is not there yet is because I haven't figured out a
way to implement it nicely - I can think of lots of horrible ways. There
are also complication with RDG/ZPF getting in on the act. So for now I
regret to tell you that you'll have to live with it for a while. I take
your point about large fleets and agree that's it's something that needs
addressing.

Hi, Colin

I am afraid that you'll have to suffer with me for a while  . In the small word where I live, life is simple: one design boats, no corrections of any sort, just plain old low point system scoring .. That means I can not always appreciate difficulties which a full fledged sailing program ought to encounter (well - at least until someone explains it to me ..).

Up until now I used my own program which I wrote with "quick n' dirty" approach. Right now I am trying to find someone to replace me in the Yacht Club and I realized that my program is too much on the '"dirty" side to be put into hands of somebody who is not a rocket scientist. Currently I don't have enough time to invest into rewriting my program, so I searched around and found your SailWave which covers most of my needs as far as I can tell. So now I have chance to educate someone quickly in using your nice programs the way I don't have to worry if everything is as it should be.

Weather here is excelent past two weeks. Relatively warm, very sunny and - best of all 3-5 Beauforts of wind!
Regards, Vladimir

How about a mechanism for selecting a group of boats and having a menu
option increment (or decrement position) by n places.
That way you could, in the original example, select everyone from the
original 10th place to last place and increment their position, and the
insert the new 10th place boat.
Or is that one of the horrible ways you've already thought of?
