Version 2.8.2 Quick entry of Elapsed times

Someone asked for a better way of entering elapsed time the said their data entry people didn’t like entering ":"s - Sorry I can’t remember who but I do at least remember someone asked.

So here is my idea. If you don’t like it let me know so I can take it out again

So I suppose if you want to keep it those that do like it should also vote

New Feature - Quick formatting of Elapsed times when using Sail Number Wizard

  • When using the Sail Number Wizard to enter Elapsed times you can now enter them in the format 4327 and this gets formatted automatically to 00:43:27. Similarly 20351 would get formatted to 02:03:51 and 954 would get formatted as 00:09:54 This should speed up entry of elapsed times and give a consistent display of the times. Earlier versions would take this as 4327 seconds. If you really want to enter times in seconds you can still do this by entering it as +4327. This change only affects entry via the Sail no wizard. Hope you like this, if not speak now or forever hold your peace!
Its available for download from the www.sailwave.com

Jon

When entering times on a keyboard with a numeric pad, it is also convenient to use the period instead of the colon as the delimiter.

I always enter Finish Times as hhmmss (no delimiters) - please don't change this!

Sounds good! I always get results as start time / finish time, but if I did get elapsed times, would be the same method as finish time.
So I vote Yes.

I’m very used to using the “.” as a delimiter when entering times and I personally like it much better than no delimiter. I always use a numeric keypad to enter the results and newer laptops with wider screens usually have the numeric keypad. Since that keypad has its own “.” key there is no movement of your hand away from its home position to do this. When you look at the result, you always know that 4327 is 43.27 and not 4.32.7 or 4.3.27 or even 4.3.2.7. No zeroes are required. I understand that if you don’t have a numeric keypad, using any delimiter requires you to move your hand away from the numbers keys and can lead to errors.

Bottom line: I vote as many times as you’ll allow for both the delimited way and the non-delimited way.

Thanks.

Will

In the Sail Number Wizard You could enter Finish time in the format hhmmss without delimiters. Sailwave recognized this numbers correct as hours, minutes and seconds. With elapsed time sailwave regognized the same sequence of numbers as seconds. I prefer the new possibility. You still can enter second with the "+".
I think, it would be nice, if entering finish time as "hhmmss" would be displayed in the main window and the result table as "hh:mm:ss", as it does now with the elapsed time entered as "hhmmss".
If You enter a time like "10:65:78" or "106578" sailwave will not reject this numbers and display those unchanged in old versions as in the last beta, but will handle the "10:65:78" correct as "11:06:18" in calculations. So beware of transposed digits!

Thanks Jon. I was the one who mentioned this at the request of my data entry person who does lots of "ten keying," which apparently is using just the number pad of a standard keyboard to enter stuff. As the plus symbol is on the number pad this is a good solution to the issue I raised.

THANK YOU!!

Malcolm has a point. You could always enter finish and elapsed in lots of different formats. The issue I raised was that all of those formats displayed as entered rather than displaying in the universal standard format of 00:00:00 (at least I believe that is a somewhat standard universal format). I asked for the ability to change how entered times are displayed, to make all displayed times consistent with times calculated by Sailwave.

Jon's change (to the entry process) is one way to solve the issue for the case I mentioned (which was entering "000000" but asking for display of "00:00:00"). Another way would have been to change the display characteristics, which I thought would have been easier to program and been a more universal solution.

I am happy with the change.

Thanks Everyone for your comments
Doing it this way maintains compatibility with older versions and I think the consensus was positive.

Christof has raised 2 good points :-

a) If you enter FINISH times with the Sail Number wizard as 1234 or 123456 format would you like it to format it to 00:12:34 and 12:34:56 respectively or should it leave it as you entered it.

b) Would you like it to reject minutes and Seconds greater than 59?
In both Finish and Elapsed times?

My request was made with respect to finishing times. I assume entry of finishing times and elapsed times is handled the same. Is that wrong? I'll need to check out the latest Beta.

Art

PS - I think entry of a finishing or corrected time that cannot happen (greater than 59) should generate an error as that is probably what it is 99%+ of the time.
