VMware on Apple silicon running Windows10/11

Hi SUG Apple Mac Users,

Has anyone a successful working installation of Sailwave running under VMware with Windows 10/11 on an Apple MacBook Pro with Apple silicon CPU in particular?

A SUG Member posted a few months ago, in this thread Successful install of Sailwave on a Silicon MacBook M1 and a Silicon Macbook M4 with WINE - #10 by huw, that they had done so successfully and would write something when they had some more working experience.

Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Huw.

I am running SW 2.38 under PlayOnMac on my 2017 iMac and it works fine. I also had it running on my 2014 MacBook Air until that died and I replaced it with a M2 MacBook. I tried PlayOnMac but could not get it installed, so I tried Crossover but got the crash when resulting handicap races (as I commented on another thread). I subsequently used Team Viewer to link back to the iMac (but you can do the same to a PC) and remotely run SW, which worked just fine.

A couple of months ago I came across UTM. I installed it on the M2, installed Windows11 and then SW - and it runs perfectly. It is fast to launch - double click UTM, start the VM, log into Windows and start SW - sounds a lot but takes moments. We keep our .blw files on a shared Google Drive, so installed that on Windows and it all works. A good and free solution that seems to work. The UTM site has all the UTM and Windows install instructions/guidance that I needed.

Cheers

Alastair

Hi Alastair,

Thank you very much for sharing and hopefully your information will be useful to others trying to or are using Sailwave on Apple Mac system with Apple M# CPU’s.

Although I do not have access to any apple devices I am going to go and read up so I am more informed and can add something to the User Guide.

Kind regards,
Huw

Hi SUG members,

Just a quick follow up to give the link to the UTM website

For what it’s worth, I installed Sailwave on Windows 11 ARM (Insider, beta) via VMware Fusion on a Mac Mini M4. Most hassle was registering at Broadcom for VMWare Fusion, and signing up to Insider program at Microsoft.

I converted the Windows VHDX image to a VDMK disk qemu (qemu-img convert), installed via Homebrew, though you might find a Windows ARM iso somewhere. Finally I needed to work around the network requirement during the installation of Windows, but the infamous ‘OOBE\BYPASSNRO’ command did the trick. Once Windows runs, installation of Sailwave is seamless.

Hi Gertjan,

Firstly welcome to the Sailwave User Group forum.

Thank you for your contribution, hopefully it wil help some else who is wanting to run Sailwave on Apple devices with Apple silicon CPU’s.

Just recently several options have been reported by Sailwave user’s wanting to run Sailwave on Apple devices.

Thank you again for sharing.
Kind regards,
