hi,
thanks for all the feedback - it is appreciated.
i will probably go for a compromise. I need a web presence to try and
get sailwave to start making some cash for me (bloody banks). i think
i’ll keep the windows client for now and extend the current ‘publish to
sailwave’ so that it publishes to a specific event that users have set
up themselves. possibly revenue streams from online entry and
advertising etc then. because of the possible financial aspect i
cannot let sailwave go open source.
however - i have no problems contributing to a sister project if
somebody wants to start an open source scoring solution which was
mentioned quite a lot - somebody just needs to get it organised (not
me!). i have a domain mysail.co.uk which i would be happy to donate if
you want that name for the project (mysail).
while a sister-sailwave is a direct competitor, it also becomes another
source for data for the web side of sailwave so i have no problems with
it…
thanks again

Hey Colin,
another thought, kind of a hybrid on proprietary software and open source, keep the core software you’ve got, but fix and publish a couple of APIs/Interfaces. One where people could write their own handicap modules and sailwave could call them, and one for I/O so that sailwave could be extended to use a network database, etc… That way you could keep and own the core product, but other folks could develop “plug-ins” that would add bits of functionality that they are particularly keen on and that they know how to build.
