Wine Problem

After our club laptop (Windows) packed up, I want to get SW running on another laptop, using Ubuntu to avoid licencing problems.

Installed Ubuntu 19.04, then Wine from Ubuntu sw - gets Wine 4.0-1. Downloaded Sailwave, but the exe does not run from Files - Wine is not shown as an app to run the exe. Got SailWave installed from a command prompt, but then still can't run Sailwave due to the Wine app problem.

The DOS environment has been setup under the .wine directory - C: drive, etc.

Any suggestions? I have been using Ubuntu and Mint at home for many years without such a problem.

Further to this - I discovered that in this setup, I can click on an
existing *.blw file and it opens successfully in Sailwave.

Its *.exe that is not working.

Hi Malcolm,

I have seen your two emails. I will run through the install

process again on my Ubuntu 18.04 LTS VM and thoroughly document
the steps. I will set-up a Ubuntu 19.04 VM and try installing
Sailwave. Be later today before I get back to you though as got a
few things to do this morning.

By I recall I did have to install from the command line. Also the

install should have placed two icons on the desktop, one to open
Sailwave and the other to open the Sailwave data folder.

FYI - I have Sailwave running on the following without problems:

  • openSUSE Tumbleweed [rolling distribution fully up to date]

with WINE 4.7 using Sailwave 2-28-1
  • Linux Mint 19.1 with WINE 3.6 using Sailwave 2-28-1
  • Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with WINE 3.0 using Sailwave 2-28-1
  • Ubuntu 16:04 LTS with WINE 1.6 using Sailwave 2-25-11
The only niggle I have on the Linux systems I use is getting the
    fonts to look nice :frowning:

Kind regards,

Huw

Huw,

Thank you. I do have the two desktop icons, but if I click on the

Sailwave one, it just opens as a text file.

No hurry for this, as its our winter closed season - have till

August before we start racing again.

Malcolm,

Your latest message came in while writing this reply. I address

the desktop icon issue in the following. Please let me know if it
works for you.

I found the install on Linux Mint easier.

I have created an Ubuntu 19.04 VM. The following are the steps I

did to have Sailwave and the default Sailwave data folder as icons
in the panel of favourite applications. Apologies if this more
detailed than you need but it might be helpful for others.

  • installed WINE [which is version 4.2-2]

  • click Ubuntu Software in favourites panel [orange suitcase

    with capital A]

  • click down arrow under Categories to reveal more categories

  • click Utilities

  • scroll down to find WINE (Develo…]

  • click WINE (Develo…]

  • click Install button in window that pops up

  • wait while installation takes place after entering password

when prompted [password is that of the user allowed to install
software which is usually the first user added during the
    install of Ubuntu]

  • Open a web browser and then access the Sailwave web site

  • Navigate to the Download section of the Sailwave web site

  • click the link of the latest version of Sailwave to down

load it [current latest version when this message typed is
    v2-28-1]

  • when download complete open the folder that Sailwave was

    downloaded to - typically Download

  • right click in the Download folder window and select 'Open

    in Terminal’

  • a terminal window will now open

  • at the prompt in the terminal window enter the word wine

followed by a space followed by the name of the Sailwave file
downloaded for the version current when this message typed
that is sw2_28_1.exe so what should appear in the terminal is
    as follows

          wine sw2_28_1.exe

  • the normal windows install should proceed, so for the

defaults just press return at each window

  • two icons will be placed on the desktop but for some reason

they do not do what they should so delete them

  • click show applications located at the bottom of the panel

[ a grid of small white squares]

  • in the window that appears right click 'Browse Sailwave' and

    select ‘Add to favourites’

  • now right click ‘Sailwave’ and select ‘Add to favourites’

  • two Sailwave icons appear in the Favourites panel -

unfortunately they are identical but if you hover the mouse
over them it is clear which is which

  • you can close the applications window now

  • click the Sailwave icon and Sailwave should appear
    Hope that is useful.

Kind regards,

Huw

Hi Malcolm,

In some Sailwave WINE installations I’ve found that the desktop and menu shortcuts they create don’t have the correct command line. Have a look at the properties of the Sailwave shortcut on the menu.

Mine (that is working) looks like this:

env WINEPREFIX="/home/andy/.wine" wine C:\windows\command\start.exe /Unix /home/andy/.wine/dosdevices/c:/users/Public/Start\ Menu/Programs/Sailwave/Sailwave.lnk

You actually don’t have to do all that if you don’t want to. You can do the same thing with:

wine “/home/andy/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Sailwave/sailwave.exe”

Obviously, replacing “andy” in this case with the name of the user account that has wine installed.

Also, if you want to automatically launch wine when you double click an .exe file, add this to the bottom of ~/.config/mimeapps.list:

application/x-ms-dos-executable=wine.desktop

Hope this helps.

Huw and Andy,

Thank you for your assistance - I've got Sailwave running on that

laptop.

Andy - I edited mimeapps.list as per your recommendation, but it

still tries to open a *.exe in Archive Manager
