Dear Colin
Following on from a detailed analysis published recently by Malcolm (Clark),
he and I have recently made some minor adjustments to the constants in the
CHIPS equation and have derived the following as the optimum implementation for
inclusion in Sailwave (as a custom equation):
5+95*(((s+1-p)/s)(1-0.9866822.7183^(-0.1622s))+0.814752.7183^(-0.1622*s))
While this
gives almost precisely the same scores as the previous version for the majority
of finishers, it differs slightly at the bottom end of the fleet as the number
of competitors increases. This
minor amendment has been made in order to optimise the scores for retired (DNF)
boats. Note DNF boats are still
scored as “last +1”.
We feel this
formula is now sufficiently robust to justify its inclusion as a hard-coded
option within Sailwave as soon as you are able to add it – which I believe has
been your intention when you can get round to it. If you are able to fit it into your plans it would be
extremely beneficial if you were able to do this prior to the start of the
summer sailing season.
In order to
distinguish this from previous versions that use slightly different constants
we have termed this “CHIPS 3”.
We would very
much appreciate whatever you can do on this.
Many thanks
Geoff

Hi Geoff.
No problem. I’ve having a break from Sailwave at the moment - and sailing in general in fact - and spending all my free time playing the piano. My hobbies tend to go in cycles so while I feel inclined to sell both Sailwave and my boat to buy a Steinway model D or maybe even a Fazioli, I know by the Summer I would have regretted it. Anyway, no probs doing that tweak - I have some other small requests to do as well. Happy New Year to everybody…
Regards,
Colin

Geoff/Malcolm,
this this still the latest formula?
5+95*(((s+1-p)/s)(1-0.9866822.7183^(-0.1622s))+0.814752.7183^(-0.1622*s))
