WRT 1.57 and usability etc

Martin, Ralph, Mike, Andy et al

v1.57 is in fact still lurking on the website:-

www.sailwave.com/binary/sw157.exe

The essential differences are:-

1. Generalisation of 'scoring fleets separately' into 'scoring groups
separately'.
2. Multiple scoring systems.
3. 'Big event' stuff like flights, finals and medal races.

It would be fairly easy to have a mode in the current version where 1.
appeared as fleets only, 2. appeared as a single scoring system and 3. was
hidden...

Would that make a difference or is the perceived complexity somewhere
else...?

I can't actually use 1.57 cos I don't have a dev capability for it and it's
behind the rules coalface.

Regards,
Colin

Can’t speak for the others, but I was really ‘voting’ for a simple
version so potential new users, who just want to do some basic scoring,
don’t get put off. Mind you, I suppose one man’s simple system is not
the same as another’s… :~ For example, I quite like the option to
use multiple scoring systems…

Hi!

Think you’re into somthing here…

Hidden, is better than “greyed out”. Peoples are getting confused when they sees too many options. Seen how Win-XP hides stuff you don’t use??

Most use is simple, plain and stright forward. The interest of doing the scoring job are “waked up” when you realise “Its simple! I can do it, and it’s greate”.

80% of Norwegians don’t read the users guide, before they get’s into trouble. Is this a Norwegian behavior only? Don’t think we’re so very special!

So, it has to be easy to use. For a novise too! “Everyone” should be able to score a simple onedesign regatta! NO computer “experts” needed.

But, colin, you have to think about your dev enviroment too. Even 1.57 NEEDS to be updated, according to RRS…

regards,

Martin

Speaking for one of the others… I
was responsible for installing and setting up Sailwave at Staunton Harold SC over
4 years ago. I stopped upgrading when we got to version 1.57 as this did
the job very nicely, and as we do not have any weird local rules, or use
flights etc, I saw no need to go any further. The system works (very well) and the
results can be updated by virtually any semi literate windows user.

I did look at the newer versions and still
follow the updates on this group, but for our purposes, with multiple, near
novice users, 1.57 still remains favourite.

Having said that the question of personal
handicaps still gets raised from time to time, and it would be nice to see this
option in an easy to use version.

Regards

Colin Davis
