Can not open .blw fiels after upgrade

Hi,

Ive upgraded to version 39 and I am now unable to open any of the
files that I created in version 38. I get an error message saying "
file not found" but I know its there Ive opened it in notepad.

Any Ideas.

Thanks

Keith

Hi Keith,

Eek! No ideas, very very strange. Lots of users have upgraded OK... If you
uninstall 39 or reinstall 38 are you able to open them again? To clutch at
straws - have they become Read-Only files somehow? Did anything else change
at the time of the upgrade? Do they open from the menu but not open from
Windows Explorer - it that it...?

Sorry I can't be much help - if you send me one of the files I'll see if I
can open it here.

Regards,
Colin J

When you installed 39, did you let it overlay the old directory or establish
a new one? I.E. 39 may be saying "file not found" because the files are in
a different directory

This is weird.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled and it still wouldn’t open the file, either from sailwave or windows explorer.

Then I remembered moving the files to a new folder so I check all the permissions (w2k) and everything is fine. So I moved the files up one level and hey presto they open. So moved them back and they don’t. Tried moving them to other folders at the same lever (C:\Documents and Settings\keith\My Documents\Personal\sailing stuff\Crosby\Results = 8) and they wont open. Move to level seven they open. So I thought Id save them to level 8 and no, it wont save them. However a new series that I started in version 39 beta 1 opens from folder at level 8.

For the time being I’ve moved them up one to open them but maybe this is a bug as I’ve created new folders at level 8 and the wont open there either. Hope that can shed some light on it.

Also you may want to add an undo button now that you are able to edit all competitors its easy to change the default rating of all when you only intended to change some boats. I now that example aint that good when you and the link to come from the default rating library.

Excellent Prog BTW

Hi Keith, I think I know what’s wrong - I’ll upload a fix tonight - it’s Sailwave, not your configuration. CJ. For now just keep the files out of level 8.

Oh just found something else. You’ll have add increase the publish bit so you publish to straight to that level and further.

Some other suggestions:

  1. When entering results for a new race, it would be handy if when the box is highlighted you could just start entering the time in, instead of having to press enter all time.

  2. How about a race timer. We run some races straight from the bridge and with you being able to enter results as a list of sail numbers it would be great if you could start a timer and as the boats finish type their sail number and when you press enter hey presto it does the time for you. Would be great when boats are finishing close together (don’t change it without giving option to change time though, if boats finish to close you might not be fast enough at typing)

It sounds a great idea, but have you actually tried doing that? Its
astonishingly difficult in a tight finish, and you can get in a
*horrible* muddle... I set up a spreadsheet to record times like that
as an experiment, and when 8 Lasers (6 figure sail nos) finished in
30 seconds I was reduced to a gibbering heap:-). Of course how likely
that is depends on your type of racing, but no matter what you do
sooner or later there'll be the situation where the whole fleets has
been parked up in sight of the finish line and the sea breeze comes
in...

am i just crazy, or does it only happen to me? whenever i “preview” results to my browser window and then close it i “lose”/sailwave-winds-up-closing-out all the browser windows i have open, which is really annoying. i’m running the latest v39 beta version.

Dear All,

Having a mechanism for recording times at the press of a button is a useful
aid especially in tight finishes and groups of boats, BUT only if additional
means are used for recording sail numbers, for example pencil & paper or
Dictaphones. The linking of times and sail numbers take place later in
relative calm.

There is a program called Race Day which has the facility for recording
finish times and linking them to sail numbers. The program does individual
race results but not series results. I have made Colin aware of this
program.

Even pencil & paper can not keep up; two years ago Datchet ran the Optimist
Inlands and in one race the first flight was becalmed and the second caught
up as the wind filled from behind. We finished in excess of 150 boats in a
6 minute time window. We successfully produced a set of results for the
race with only one query over position.
We used Dictaphones on each end of the line, each end of the line missed one
boat each and a different one.

Thankfully the Optimist sail numbers are only 4 digits long.

Inlands and in one race the first flight was becalmed and the second caught
up as the wind filled from behind. We finished in excess of 150 boats in a
6 minute time window. We successfully produced a set of results for the
race with only one query over position.
We used Dictaphones on each end of the line, each end of the line missed

one

boat each and a different one.

Thankfully the Optimist sail numbers are only 4 digits long.

Of course how likely
that is depends on your type of racing, but no matter what you do
sooner or later there'll be the situation where the whole fleets has
been parked up in sight of the finish line and the sea breeze comes
in...

Huw,

Do you have the URL for "Race Day" as I was thinking of a similar program
for Draycote, but why re-invent the wheel!

Hi Barb,

Sailwave makes use of an active browser thread if one is running and displays the results as if you had pressed a link to go there. So ‘Close’ will close the whole thread and ‘Back’ will go back to the window you were at before the preview (which is what you’re after I think?). At any rate it works like that with Explorer. Which browser are you using?

Phil,

The US Sailing web page that reviews Race Day is
http://www.ussailing.org/racemgt/Scoring_Programs/Raceday.htm

and the direct link to the Race Day web page is
http://www.soton.ac.uk/~jets/raceday/index.html

A reminder that it does not do series results, the race information needs to
be exported and then read into another package SailWave.

Huw

There is a program called Race Day which has the facility for recording
finish times and linking them to sail numbers. The program does individual
race results but not series results. I have made Colin aware of this
program.

Even pencil & paper can not keep up; two years ago Datchet ran the Optimist

Hi Barb,

Contrary to my previous message I’ve failed to control how Explorer starts (surprise); it could be the size of the G&T I’ve just had though… Anyway, you can control it from your end. Go into Tools+InternetOptions+Advanced (from Explorer) and then untick “Reuse windows for launching shortcuts”. That seems to sort it out for me. CJ
