Virtually all cruiser racing in Ireland is run under IRC and one or more personal handicaps - the main one is called ECHO. Even some One Designs have both Scratch and a personal handicap.
Personal handicaps use TCFs in a similar way as IRC - they are just a multiplier of the elapsed time to get a corrected time.
While IRC handicaps are pretty static - the personal handicaps are recalculated at intervals throughout a series. It depends on the club and the series.
I'm new to Sailwave and I'm now playing with setting recalculated handicaps in Sailwave.

Question 1.
What is the term "Default Rating" ?
A Rating or Handicap is simply the rating applied to the first race - and subsequent races until a new handicap value is set. Its just a value rather than a "Default" value.
It appears that if a handicap is changed in a race, then if the box under it which states "use until next race rating is specified" is not clicked then the Default Rating is used in the next race. Is there any racing format which would use this approach?
Question 2.
Question on "previous race rating"
R1
Default Rating: 0.952
Previous Race Rating: blank
Rating for this Race: 0.952
Race Rating: blank (no change made)
R2
Default Rating: 0.952
Previous Race Rating: 0.929 (rating in the previous race is 0.952 not 0.929 ???)
Rating for this Race: 0.929
Race Rating: 0.929 (hcap change for this race)
Also ticked checkbox to use this rating until the next hcap change.
I guess my problem is that I don't know the logic behind how the Edit Results - Rating tab works.
Question 1.
What is the term “Default Rating” ?
AFAIK it’s the value set when you enter the competitor in the series.

Yes.

SIs allow you to switch between, say, Radial and 4.7 rigs on the same series entry and use the correct handicap for the rig?

As I understand it one problem with Echo is that all is not
mechanical/mathematical. There is an element of appreciation left to
the scorer/handicapper.

Re the program mentioned by Mike Butterfield, that I have written to allow Personal Handicaps with Sailwave. Although this was written to support the Echo handicap it is not limited to the Echo handicap and as it uses Excel to calculate the new handicap, as long as you are familiar with Excel then you can have any rules that you like to create the new handicap, you simply edit the template that it uses. The program itself does not do any calculation of the handicap, it simply extracts all the data from sailwave into Excel and writes back the new handicap that excel calculates into the next race. One button click to extract and one to write the new handicaps back to sailwave.
As I understand it one problem with Echo is that all is not
mechanical/mathematical. There is an element of appreciation left to the
scorer/handicapper.

Yes, I guess that the "Default" term could apply where one race in a series has a different hcap and all the other races use the Default hcap.
We would have separate classes for Standard/Radial/4.7 rigs and switching rigs would not be allowed - but I take your point that where there is mixed bunch of rigs racing together, if one of them switches rig for a race then the default / one race hcap change could be used.
Edit Competitor shows the Default hcap.
Mike Butterfield is coming to Dublin next week so I'll show him what I'm on about then.

In an endeavour to spread the good word, I’ve undertaken to run a Sailwave training day at my local club next month. Not being one to reinvent wheels unnecessarily, I was wondering if anyone had any notes/materials already put together for such purposes. What I have in mind is an agenda along the lines of:
Overview of Sailwave (possibly PPT, using projector)
One design setup
One design scoring
Handicap setup
Handicap scoring
jury decisions, scoring changes, error corrections, etc.
The last topic will be honourable mention only, for a futher ‘advanced’ class if needed.
For both one design and handicap, I’d envisage bringing a sample race competitor list and results, so each participant can go through a set up and scoring exercise, complete with random recorder errors for a sense of reality!
Everyone of course gets a copy of the ABYC user guide
Any suggestions other that to just get on with it!
I am running 3 Sailwave workshops next month, 2x for WYA in
South Wales and 1x for Royal Southampton YC. Just starting to put
thoughts together. Not planning many presentation slides, planning
to talk to Sailwave on a screen.
Hadn’t thought about ABYC user guide, good idea.
Think your list bullet points is good but think you need to
cover publishing results. I would add in ‘specials’ about
uploading results to RYA for PH and NHC, but may not be relevant
in Ireland!
Will let you have my thoughts once done.
Kind regards,
Huw

An excellent set of tools…. I
notice that RAF is included and should be updated to RET for the next time you
use them.
Also if someone is standing up and talking
their way thorough setting up Sailwave it would be a great opportunity to video
the sessions and upload to YouTube with a link on the Sailwave site.
