Install Sailwave on thumb drive as a portable app?

Our fleet captain has a laptop from work - but cannot install non-business programs on it. Can he install Sailwave on a thumb drive, such that it is a stand alone program (like a portable app) so that it is not 'on the laptop'?

Thanks,

Michael

Yes I believe it is. I did it once by copying the installed files into appropriate user folders on the work computer and then on that computer run Sailwave and make sure that the requisite folders are set in the global settings. All these folders could be on a “thumb” drive I think although I did not terry that.

You just need to install sailwave to the stick or copy the install to the stick. Sailwave does not copy any files to windows folders etc.

Hi Michael,

I have put a zip together of the Sailwave 2.8.5 here Sailwave2-8-5.zip if you download this and unzip it to the root of a USB stick then you will have a directory named sailwave. This is all that is required to install Sailwave.

In there you will see something similar to this

Inline images 1

The second and uppercase SAILWAVE.EXE is a shortcut which runs it with the /stick option. This then stores and reads some of the parameters from the memory stick. Unfortunately it does not store them all, it does still create a sailwave entry in the registry and store quite a few of the parameters there e.g. the ftp site. So I can’t say it leaves no trace but there is no program installed and all the data can be stored on the USB memory stick.

You can of course always delete the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sailwave.

Hope this helps

Hi Michael,

With Colin’s help we have fixed the issue of it writing anything to the registry, so now it runs totally from the memory stick.

I’ve done the changes to the latest version so this in now Sailwave.2.9.5 you can download Sailwave2-9-5.zip and unzip it to the root of you USB stick, or where ever you like and run it as in my previous post. This also supports the NHC system and so if there are any of you out there, that want to play with the latest version without the worry of upsetting your working system, now’s your chance - Just unzip this to a USB stick and have a play.

Many thanks Colin and Jon!

This is something that will make it more easy for many clubs/scorer and now the scorer can use his own USB-device and work from that.

Tested at work today in a network that only allows me to work as a user and is not allowed to install anything - Yes it worked!!!

Will you keep this updated and able to download from the webpage?

You mean from a thumb drive? Hummm, might be interesting to try!

Probably the easiest thing to do is just put Linux itself on a bootable stick and install WINE and Sailwave as part of that. There's lots of information on the web about how to create a thumbdrive-bootable Linux version. The advantage is you can have your own custom Linux distribution, with all the applications you need, on a thumb drive you carry on your keychain.

I did a quick test - seems to work!

With Ubuntu 12.10, extracted the files to a folder on the flash drive, then opened the sailwave.exe file with wine. Program opens, I could create a new series.

But I do have another installation of Sailwave on that PC.
