Opti One design scoring

Hi guys... more cobwebs to erase... (sucks getting old).

I need to score an Opti One design class with 1 start and three sub divisions. I can score overall by fleet (Opti) and I also need to score in Red White and Blue (Division) keeping the rank orders of the overall.

And the regatta also has a different race circle of junior Laser Radials and C420s.

So, from sailwave of yore... I need to check a box on score overall sort by divison which preserved the rank order of the opti overall results.

Do I need to click the multiple first seconds thirds box in global setup?

Do I need to have two blw files for the two circles... IE there is no way to score Opti R W and B, Opti overall, Lasers and C420's in one pass?

Thanks
Mark

Mark,

What we usually do is set up a division for the Optis and show the div as Red, Blue or White. This is easier if you also enter the DOB for the competitors. Then you can sort this list and easily enter the div (or fleet, if you prefer). When you print the Opti overall, just go down the list and look for the top Red, Blue and White boats.

I usually try to have separate files per circle, but there’s no reason to do that if you don’t want to. A single file will suffice.

Hi Mark,

While you have been away you may have missed a new feature that I built into Sailwave, specifically with the Optimists in mind, where the starts are printed in separate columns so that you can see who beat who

Taken from end of last year but all this is in the current version.

I have updated the Sailwave site with a new version 2.8.1

This will print column headers with the starts appended

What I have done is I chose 6 characters as that allows you to use all the colours such as Yellow and Silver which are 6 characters

If the start name is longer than 6 characters it won’t print it. This works well I think because you probably don’t want to print them on the Finals only on the Qualifiers

If you start the Name with a space the browser will typically place it under the Race name if you don’t start with a space it appends it

so you could do something like this:-

Hi John and Jon.

Apparantly, the standard convention for US Opti world is to publish Overall results 1 to 50.... Which is no problem for sailwave generating a published scoresheet with the appropriate fields.

Then Opti world publishes those same results in Red White and blue sub fleets. Keeping the rank order of the overall scoring.
Sailwave does this by ticking the "Sort results by Field" Division = red white or blue. The problem is that I can't get the printout to sort these results into seperate score sheets for Red sub fleet. White sub fleet. Just propogating the results as if they were different fleets.

Is there a way to print out a results score sheet of these sub divisions as if they were scored as independent fleets??

This looks like a real PIA for my weekend.

Thanks

Hi John and Jon.

In correspondance with US opti world.
From what I can tell, US OPTI World protocal is to not distinguish red white and blue divisions in your overall scoring. The kids are competing in one class against each other EG. (1 to 50). You then award additional prizes in the age groups, red white and blue and you publish score sheet for these sub groups EG 1 to 15) BUT you keep the rank scoring from the overall score. (Unlike an adult class where the red fleet would be rescored against each other)

US Opti world scores the Opti class overall Sailwave manages this ... no problem.

US Opti world then scores three sub divisions Red White and Blue. Sailwave manges this no problem.... You have the default settings and simply check score competitors as one group. and then tick the button sort results by field after scoring. No problem.

the problem is getting this set of results Published in a convient and pretty manner. IE publish the sub divisions (red white and blue) AS IF they were fleets scored seperately (but using the rank ordered overall scores when competitors are scored as one big group.

Opti world is confused if you score the red fleet sailors as if they were just one race... (score results by divsion red white or blue) (This is the format of all sailwave opti results that you see published on the web.

This is going to really stink this weekend.
Can you recomend an html editor that would allow me to chop up the HTML file.... or have a work around?

This is a link to last years JO Opti scoring pdf file

I hate the java score format but it is doing the sub fleet scoring the way opti world desires.

Hi Mark,

quick question - are the competitors in each of the 3 colour groups

staying in that colour group for the whole regatta?

A way of showing what you want is to in the grid view sort by colour

group column and the hold down the CTL key and click on the overall
rank column, this will then show what you want. However, when you
publish it will produce one long set of results, so if you want to
have some white space between the colour groups a bit of HTML
hacking will be required.

Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Huw

AHH.... NOOOOOOOOO .... HTML hacking on a hot saturday afternoon just to get seperate red white and blue scoresheets.. This does not sound like a plan. Certainly not something I want to do with at least one beer in hand.... Don't even mention Sunday!

Jon, This is a truly terrible solution for sailwave scorekeepers. In my region alone. we have as many as three junior events a week during the summer and all events will have Opti Red White and Blue scored this way plus Opti Green, plus Laser radial, Laser and 420s.
This will take two sailwave blw files... (Lasers, 420's and Opti Greens) and a second blw file for scoring Opti's RED WHITE and BLUE and OVERALL) And I will have to hack the html of the Opti overall sorted into divisions to generate red white and blue... THEN hack the OD scoring html file plus the opti overall file PLUS the hacked Red white and blue files to generate one html file to publish.

Sadly, this is not a solution.

I’ve been lurking on the Sailwave list for quite some time…… this thread brings back memories!

I was the score keeper for the 2004 US Opti Nationals, hosted by Bellport Bay Yacht Club at a beach in Patchogue Village.

So, two comments!

(1) Alternative to Sailwave?

I was NOT involved with correspondence and agreements with the Optimist Class organization! However, by the time I got involved we were required by the class association to use a program called St. Pete’s Scorer.

St. Pete’s Scorer was NOT and still is NOT free like Sailwave! In 2004 I recall there being a version that was specific to Optis. I just checked the St. Pete’s Scorer home page, and it looks like that is now done as mode within the program instead of a separate version.

What was nice about this program was that it spit out results EXACTLY the way the Opti class wanted them. And the program also handled assigning flights.

The drawback was that with a fleet the size of what sailed in the Opti Nationals saying the program “spit out results” is being kind! It totally bogged my top of the line laptop down., That may not be an issue with the current version and with today’s computers with more RAM. I can’t say from experience as all the scoring I’ve done since has been with Sailwave.

(2) Alternative to HTML editing?

Sailwave has the capability of exporting to the clipboard in a way where results can be manipulated quite easily in Excel.

Thanks, I hated St Petes... I blithely recommended clubs use Sailwave and blamed their using St Petes or Javascore on the {I will use what the last guy in the club did... "I am not changing anything for my once in a lifetime duty"

I have an emergency email into last years opti scorekeeper for NA's who ran the NA's with sailwave.... So maybe there is a work around that I don't see. I remember my aha several years ago when Opti world explained their practice... Colin added the check box... I paid no more attention to Opti world and just assumed that the printout of the RWB results would follow accordingly. The ease and flexibility of generating good printouts is the big selling factor for club scorekeepers to upgrade. (ooops!)

I have a plan C option which is to use the online Regatta Networks scoring module.... but that is a bit risky and not making for a happy camper here.

Hi Mark,

So as I understand it Sailwave does every thing you need except that when you select the option

Score all competitors as one group - scoring system is applied once and you sort the results by a specified field e.g. Division after scoring

You would like then to be able to publish the divisions as separate tables rather than as a single table with all the divisions following one after the other as it currently does.

I’m sure we can add that option for you.

Let me know

If you haven’t used the latest version of Sailwave - have a look at some of the new features such as when you are entering the results through the sailno wizard - use the + key instead of the enter key and it saves you pressing the enter twice - you then use the enter if you want to enter a scoring code rather than just the next position. And may be the Alternate Sailno when they change sails.

I usually try to have separate files per circle, but there’s no

reason to

do that if you don’t want to. A single file will suffice.

I need to score an Opti One design class with 1 start and three sub

Do I need to click the multiple first seconds thirds box in global

Do I need to have two blw files for the two circles… IE there is

See below

So as I understand it Sailwave does every thing you need except that when
you select the option

Score all competitors as one group - scoring system is applied once and you
sort the results by a specified field e.g. Division after scoring

You would like then to be able to publish the divisions as separate tables
rather than as a single table with all the divisions following one after
the other as it currently does.

I'm sure we can add that option for you.

Let me know

Hi Jon
Yes, that could work. The limitation is that the blw file would have to contain only one class Opti (Red white blue) sub divisions... Opti Green is a separate class and could not be scored with Opti.

I could make that work for the weekend.

Long term... This would still be a difiult solution. a club will run juniors in a multiclass format and enter them all at registration... usually by hand into a blw file.. Sometimes they don't have a separate green fleet (beginners course) and so they would have one finish line scoring the two class Opti Green and Opti. (Red White blue sub divisions) They will collect finish positions form the 2or three race circles and enter finish position. They will hit score the regatta and get Opti Green and Opti overall scores plus laser and 420 scores in Score by Fleet. All will work properly and you will have a single Html file that looks great.

Then they will have go back to the blw file... exclude Opti Green and all other sailors (Lasers, 420s) from the event.
Score the regatta again overall by changing to score regatta as a single group and also ticking the box right below. That would then feed the results into your new print out solution which will generate a second html file for the special sub division scores.

A better solution would be to add the the option to score by Fleet SUB divisions (RWB) to just the selected fleet eg Opti Fleet group score plus the sub division tables without having to make a second pass and combine html files for publishing.. (Obviously this differs then score by divisions in the score by fleet part of the program)

Red White and Blue are age groups that are populated by the sailors Date of birth relative to the regatta date. I am told Sailwave can do this already (I have not looked into it) since I am given the RWB divisions by the regatta registration system.

I don't know how they score masters and grand masters in adult events... do they usually rescore the division or just keep the rank scoring like Opti world??

Thanks for the tip on entering sail numbers in the wizard... I have a separate usb numeric keypad to make the number entering easier on my laptop. I certainly missed this addition over the interval. I will try the tip this weekend.

I have never used an html editor... so I have not tried John's suggestion. At worst ... I have Sat am to figure it out.

Thanks Mark

If you haven't used the latest version of Sailwave - have a look at some of
the new features such as when you are entering the results through the
sailno wizard - use the + key instead of the enter key and it saves you
pressing the enter twice - you then use the enter if you want to enter a
scoring code rather than just the next position. And may be the Alternate
Sailno when they change sails.

So as I understand it Sailwave does every thing you need except that when

Yes

I'm sure we can add that option for you.

Let me know

This would be great expecially if it is a quick easy fix for the weekend.

Long term. Junior US regattas are Optis with this RWB sub class. plus Opti Green, Laser and 420. A single sailwave .blw file and score by fleet will do most of what is needed.

The best solution would be to click the rank order sub class button in global options... select the class and subclass/divisions fields and have it generate the sub class's in the print outs automatically when you print the Opti class overall... you also get the sub class score sheets nicely labeled etc.

The current structure would mean that you would have to exclude all sailors but those in the Opti Class.. so you could score overall.. then score by sub class and then go to the new print out format. That is asking too much of the yacht club scoreer.... they can get the regatta set up .. data entered and then hit score... and print the html file.

My US colleague also muttered something about locking discards in place when you score flights.??? (above my pay grade)

If you haven't used the latest version of Sailwave - have a look at some of

Ha.... see what you miss after a year or two off.... I have a keypad for my laptop for this job and that tip will come in handy.

Thanks

Mark,

We run Opti events and I have encountered this issue. I believe the solution can be handled in the Publish Results dialog and leave the scoring functions unaffected.

First, score the groups separately by Fleet. This will give you all of your overall classes (OptiRBW, OptiGrn, Laser, 420, etc.), then publish as usual.

Then, add a new publish function check box below the "Publish forms used", called "Publish separate tables by field" and have a "Select field" drop down below that. When checked, whatever results are specified in the Publish function will be further subdivided into multiple tables by whatever field is selected, say, "Division".

Thus, you would select ONLY OptiRBW from the "Include these scored groups" and check the "Publish separate tables by field" box and select field "Division", which has the R/B/W labels.

Boom! Separate tables for Opti R, B & W with overall scores maintained - AND you're not messing with the other multi-class results.

The only problem I see with this is that "R-B-W" is not in alphabetical order, so maybe you need to publish the subdivided tables with page breaks and re-order them in HTML.

Regards,
Kett

PS - This function could also be used for breaking-out Masters/Grand Masters divisions, gender divisions, etc.

Thanks Mark

Mark,

Jon has created a separate utility SW Competitor Lists, this could

do what you are looking for APART from include all the individual
race results. Perhaps Jon could extend it to allow inclusion of
individual race results. It would allow you to produce separate
lists easily, with a page break between, of your Red, Blue &
Yellow groups showing overall rank, Total & Nett points. You are
able to select which columns are published from a pool of columns -
not all currently but all the main ones.

Jon developed the utility so that we could quickly produce lists of

competitors for race teams, especially the Laser race teams who
frequently ask for last four digit sail number order and are their
any duplicates.

Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Mark,

So as I understand it Sailwave does every thing you
need except that when
you select the option

Score all competitors as one group - scoring system
is applied once and you
sort the results by a specified field e.g. Division
after scoring

You would like then to be able to publish the
divisions as separate tables
rather than as a single table with all the divisions
following one after
the other as it currently does.

I’m sure we can add that option for you.
Let me know
If you haven’t used the latest version of Sailwave -
have a look at some of
the new features such as when you are entering the
results through the
sailno wizard - use the + key instead of the enter
key and it saves you
pressing the enter twice - you then use the enter if
you want to enter a
scoring code rather than just the next position. And
may be the Alternate
Sailno when they change sails.

Hi Mark,

I’ve put a new version on the Sailwave site under the Download beta its version 2.11.0. Basically if you Score all competitors as one group and select a sorting field it now publishes them as separate tables. You change the publish order and select which ones are printed in the same manor as you can when you score groups of competitors separately.

So you have a few options now. Your long reply only came in about an hour and a half ago. I wouldn’t join the published pages together keep them as separate pages on the server and just link to them. Publishing them all in one go you wouldn’t be able to adjust the order of the both divisions and sub divisions at the same time.

This version of Sailwave can be controlled by windows messages so if there is a special sequence of events that are common I could automate that with a separate program.

If you want to exclude a block of competitors use the Tools - set competitor field and set the Exclude field to 1 for those. That might be obvious to you but I’ve seen many people do it manually.

Ketts solution looks interesting - I’ll have to try that

Let us know how it goes

I’m sure we can add that option for you.

Let me know

Hi Jon

Yes, that could work. The limitation is that the blw file would have to contain only one class Opti (Red white blue) sub divisions… Opti Green is a separate class and could not be scored with Opti.

I could make that work for the weekend.

Long term… This would still be a difiult solution. a club will run juniors in a multiclass format and enter them all at registration… usually by hand into a blw file… Sometimes they don’t have a separate green fleet (beginners course) and so they would have one finish line scoring the two class Opti Green and Opti. (Red White blue sub divisions) They will collect finish positions form the 2or three race circles and enter finish position. They will hit score the regatta and get Opti Green and Opti overall scores plus laser and 420 scores in Score by Fleet. All will work properly and you will have a single Html file that looks great.

Then they will have go back to the blw file… exclude Opti Green and all other sailors (Lasers, 420s) from the event.

Score the regatta again overall by changing to score regatta as a single group and also ticking the box right below. That would then feed the results into your new print out solution which will generate a second html file for the special sub division scores.

A better solution would be to add the the option to score by Fleet SUB divisions (RWB) to just the selected fleet eg Opti Fleet group score plus the sub division tables without having to make a second pass and combine html files for publishing… (Obviously this differs then score by divisions in the score by fleet part of the program)

Red White and Blue are age groups that are populated by the sailors Date of birth relative to the regatta date. I am told Sailwave can do this already (I have not looked into it) since I am given the RWB divisions by the regatta registration system.

I don’t know how they score masters and grand masters in adult events… do they usually rescore the division or just keep the rank scoring like Opti world??

Thanks for the tip on entering sail numbers in the wizard… I have a separate usb numeric keypad to make the number entering easier on my laptop. I certainly missed this addition over the interval. I will try the tip this weekend.

I have never used an html editor… so I have not tried John’s suggestion. At worst … I have Sat am to figure it out.

Thanks Mark

If you haven’t used the latest version of Sailwave - have a look at some of

the new features such as when you are entering the results through the

sailno wizard - use the + key instead of the enter key and it saves you

pressing the enter twice - you then use the enter if you want to enter a

scoring code rather than just the next position. And may be the Alternate

Sailno when they change sails.

plan. Certainly not something I want to do with at least one beer in

Jon, This is a truly terrible solution for sailwave scorekeepers. In my

region alone. we have as many as three junior events a week during the

summer and all events will have Opti Red White and Blue scored this way

plus Opti Green, plus Laser radial, Laser and 420s.

This will take two sailwave blw files… (Lasers, 420’s and Opti Greens)

and a second blw file for scoring Opti’s RED WHITE and BLUE and OVERALL)

And I will have to hack the html of the Opti overall sorted into divisions

to generate red white and blue… THEN hack the OD scoring html file plus

the opti overall file PLUS the hacked Red white and blue files to generate

one html file to publish.

Sadly, this is not a solution.

Hi John and Jon.

In correspondance with US opti world.

From what I can tell, US OPTI World protocal is to not distinguish red

white and blue divisions in your overall scoring. The kids are

competing in one class against each other EG. (1 to 50). You then

award additional prizes in the age groups, red white and blue and you

publish score sheet for these sub groups EG 1 to 15) BUT you keep the

rank scoring from the overall score. (Unlike an adult class where the

red fleet would be rescored against each other)

US Opti world scores the Opti class overall Sailwave manages this …

no problem.

US Opti world then scores three sub divisions Red White and Blue.

Sailwave manges this no problem… You have the default settings and

simply check score competitors as one group. and then tick the button

sort results by field after scoring. No problem.

the problem is getting this set of results Published in a convient and

pretty manner. IE publish the sub divisions (red white and blue) AS

IF they were fleets scored seperately (but using the rank ordered

overall scores when competitors are scored as one big group.

Opti world is confused if you score the red fleet sailors as if they

were just one race… (score results by divsion red white or blue)

(This is the format of all sailwave opti results that you see published

on the web.

This is going to really stink this weekend.

Can you recomend an html editor that would allow me to chop up the HTML

file… or have a work around?

This is a link to last years JO Opti scoring pdf file

I hate the java score format but it is doing the sub fleet scoring the

way opti world desires.

Thanks

Mark,

What we usually do is set up a division for the Optis and show the

div as

Red, Blue or White. This is easier if you also enter the DOB for the

competitors. Then you can sort this list and easily enter the div (or

fleet, if you prefer). When you print the Opti overall, just go down

the

list and look for the top Red, Blue and White boats.

I usually try to have separate files per circle, but there’s no

reason to

do that if you don’t want to. A single file will suffice.
