Regatta rating files

I am setting up for our regatta in 3 weeks time.
I would like to run the single sailwave file, but with 4 divisions:
1. Slow monohulls, under Victorian yardstick (VY)
2. Trailable yachts, under Class Based Handicap (CBH) (C=ExCBH)
3. Fast monohulls, under VY
4. Catamarans, under VY, excpet the 14' cats under Konawarra Bay Yardstick (KBY)
I have setup 4 fleets as above in the sailwave file.
I have made the rating system for division 2 to be not inherited, as I want to use a separate calculation.
Can I have 2 (or more) csv files which sw searches for the ratins, or do I need to have one single csv file that it looks for?

Sailwave will read all the files in the directory. Have you tried it?

Let me know if you still have a problem

Jon

Hi,

The email you sent me the last message from says it is no longer in use so I'm posting the reply here in the hope you will pick it up.

You can have multiple rating systems but you have to define the rules for which rating systems apply to which fleets

If you go to the Scoring system and then to the fleets tab you can create as many different fleets as you like and you can specify what defines the fleet. Then edit the fleet and go to the rating system tab for that fleet. Untick the Inherit box and select the scoring system you wish to use for this fleet. Repeat for any other fleets you have created.

Hope this helps

Thanks Jon,

I have trouble with my yahoo accounts, I did look for your response on the forum and replied there too.

What you describe is exactly what I did, which seemed to work. I put in some dummy results to check and I get some incredibly long corrected times (being 6:18:33:17) for my simple c=e*r formula, despite the formula testing correctly. I could send you this file along with my ratings files, if you could have a chance to see what I have done wrong.

On a note about the .csv ratings files (this is what I posted back from that account I should not use, so probably did not get to you):

Having more than one .csv file in the ratings folder does work, but I found out by testing that all the .csv files need to have ‘VY’ as the rating system code (or maybe all the same, at least). I have 3 ratings files, the vy file available on the sailwave download, thank you, and the CBH (Class Based Handicap used for trailable yachts) file and the KBY (Koonawarra Bay Yardstick for catamarans). I initially had the rating system code as ‘TCF’ for the CBH and the KBY, but could not see that information from the boat class field in the edit competitor window. When I changed the rating system code to ‘VY’ that information became viewable.

I have been perplexed about the short list of boat class ratings separated by an empty line when looking for boat classes using the above method, and have noticed that the short extra list is created as new boats are added to a series. I find this a bit of a pain as I cannot type the first few letters to find the class, but have to scroll down to find it.

I hope this all makes sense

Hi Rob,

The rating in the csv file needs to match the rating you are using for the fleet. If you post your files I'm sure some one here more experienced than me will help you out. If there is a problem with the program then I will sort it out for you, but there are many users out there that have a greater expertise in this area than me.

If you look in Help - Log book it will confirm where it is loading the ratings from and the number of ratings that it loaded.

Cheers Jon,

OK, that makes sense. I now have all the rating system codes matching and I can read all the information from within the competitor window.

I do have the custom rating system radio button selected for my fleet 2, and in the custom rating system tab, I have the inherit boxes unticked.

I have the formula for the custom rating system as c=e*r, but the program still works the corrected time as the VY (c=(e/vy)*100)

If, as you say, the rating system in the cvs file (that is VY) needs to match the rating in the fleet, does that mean that the program will always use the VY formula? Is this a problem with how I have set this up or is it a problem with the program?

Hi Rob. If you have a fleet specific scoring system, set up it should use the rating settings within it (inherited or overridden - the latter in your case) when scoring that fleet.

I am fiddling with it now, and have changed the VY to a TCF rating and put in the formula for VY for those fleets that need it and the formula for the CBH, but so far the calculation the program does for the CBH is incorrect, it still does the calculation for VY (the parent)?

If there is a problem with the program then I will sort it out for you, but there are many users out there that have a greater expertise in this area than me.

If you look in Help - Log book it will confirm where it is loading the ratings from and the number of ratings that it loaded.

What you describe is exactly what I did, which seemed to w ork. I put in some
dummy results to check and I get some incredibly long corrected times (being
6:18:33:17) for my simple c=e*r formula, despite the formula testing
correctly. I could send you this file along with my ratings files, if you
could have a chance to see what I have done wrong.

On a note about the .csv ratings files (this is what I posted back from that
account I should not use, so probably did not get to you):

Having more than one .csv file in the ratings folder does work, but I found
out by testing that all the .csv files need to have ‘VY’ as the rating
system code (or maybe all the same, at least). I have 3 ratings files, the
vy file available on the sailwave download, thank you, and the CBH (Class
Based Handicap used for trailable yachts) file and the KBY (Koonawarra Bay
Yardstick for catamarans). I initially had the rating system code as ‘TCF’
for the CBH and the KBY, but could not see that information from the boat
class field in the edit competitor window. When I changed the rating system
code to ‘VY’ that information became viewable.

I have been perplexed about the short list of boat class ratings separated
by an empty line when looking for boat classes using the above method, and
have noticed that the short extra list is created as new boats are added to
a series. I find this a bit of a pain as I cannot type the first few letters
to find the class, but have to scroll down to find it.

I hope this all makes sense

Hi,

The email you sent me the last message from says it is no longer in use so
I’m posting the reply here in the hope you will pick it up.

You can have multiple rating systems but you have to define the rules for
which rating systems apply to which fleets

If you go to the Scoring system and then to the fleets tab you can create as
many different fleets as you like and you can specify what defines the
fleet. Then edit the fleet and go to the rating system tab for that fleet.
Untick the Inherit box and select the scoring system you w ish to use for
this fleet. Repeat for any other fleets you have created.

Hope this helps

G’day John,

It could be the way we have set up or not knowing where to find.

We have entered approx. 8 races of a handicap series & when we view the BCR the program seems to display the actual BCR that each boat would need to obtain
an equal result for all boats for the race only.

I think the idea is the BCR changes slightly each race depending on the competitors result.?

IS there a section in the user guide that best helps how to set up in the first place.?

Hi Marcus,

I understand what you want now. OK in all the current released versions of Sailwave the BCR is calculated and display for each race. This is the Rating they would have need to be at to obtain an equal first. Sailwave does support the using a different rating for each race but you have to manually enter it.

That was the Bad news.

Now the Good News:-

Version 2.9 of Sailwave which is getting close to release does support the required mechanism. You may have read an announcement by the RYA if not here is a link to it http://www.rya.org.uk/newsevents/enewsletters/theclubroom/december2012/Pages/Changeoftackforcruiserracing.aspx

This is their new National Handicap for Cruisers scheme. They did tell me they were going to post updated details about it on there website yesterday but have not seen this yet - let us a know if you see something appear. The target date they have for the release of it is the 1st March.

I have been working with them for several months to build support into Sailwave to fully support this (That’s why I’ve been quiet with other releases). Fundamentally it consists of two modes a Club racing mode and a Regatta mode which have different rules for calculating the rating for the next race. The Regatta mode is a lot more complicated. Now with version 2.9 when you hit score or rescore then the rating for the next race is automatically updated in Sailwave according to the rules. Now I appreciate you are in Australia and may not want to use the same rules as the RYA but I have also built into Sailwave an additional mode that uses Excel to specify the calculation rules and the Version 2.9 comes complete with 2 working templates that fully support the RYA National Handicap for Cruisers Club and Regatta modes. This allows anyone to see the working calculations as a full audit trail of how the ratings were calculated - so you can always check the calculations are correct and if for any reason there was a discrepancy it is possible to see why. There is no reason though if you want you can replace these templates with your own - you could make it use any rules you want. You will need a copy of Excel to do this though. Using the built in calculation there is no need for Excel.

While on the topic I’m looking for 2 or 3 people to do some initial Beta testing of Version 2.9 before I release the official Beta version. Ideally they will have some experience with scoring cruiser racing and at least a basic understanding of Excel and even better if they have some experience of Personal handicap schemes if you are or know of anyone interested if they would like to contact me at jon@sailwave.com

Hi Rob,

I have in the past successfully had a single Sailwave which used two

different rating systems, PY & SCHRS. So I would expect Sailwave
to be able to handle multiple rating systems within one .BLW file.

To further complicate matters I also had two different scoring

profiles I switched between, Low Point & High Point.

Like Jon has offered, I am also willing to look at your .BLW file

and see if I can spot anything.

Won't be able to look at file if you send it through before Friday

as off to Manchester University with son for his interview day.

Kind regards,
Huw
