sail no wizard

The sail number wizard is obviously pretty useful, but you have to enter the
sail numbers by hand one by one. Would it be a good option to allow the
sail numbers to be either entered one per line or pasted from an external
source into a text box and then let the wizard rip on the whole lot...?
With the new start stuff explicitly defining start times and delineating
competitors in flights it would be safe. (apart from bugs introduced by me).

Hi Ed,

What I had in mind was that somebody on the race boat had maybe jotted down
the saiil numbers into a pocket PC. They come ashore - copy the file to the
PC and then just paste the sail numbers into the SailNo wizard.

You are right about the double entry - now that starts explicitly define
start times and the type of result expected it's possible - I could preview
what the expected result will be on the tab where the sail number is entered
and unless the user intervens, go with it. In fact i could get rid of the
single enter too if it went into action as soon as the sail matched - but
that's probably too dangerous

This feature would not be useful to me as I enter results from a hand written page. I find that electronics aren't such a good idea on our RC pontoon boat and that a paper trail can be very useful for resolving disputes.

Yes, that is a valid use case. I don't mean to discourage this feature from
being developed. The topic just reminded me of a pet peeve I have when
using the sail number wizard.

You are right about the double entry - now that starts explicitly define
start times and the type of result expected it's possible - I
could preview
what the expected result will be on the tab where the sail number
is entered
and unless the user intervens, go with it. In fact i could get rid of the

I love the first idea, but not the second (getting rid of the single
Enter!). Actually, the "problem" is my clumsiness ... I sometimes forget
the second Enter press and accordingly make a huge mess of the wizard. What
happens is that the next sail number gets entered as the position of the
previous boat, if you can follow the consequence of forgetting the second
Enter press. OTOH, having the two Enter presses is a bit of a safeguard to
(sort of) force you to check before the final Enter. It also allows the
entry of codes instead of a position. But, there ought to be a more
efficient way to design this bit of the UI and what you suggest here is a
big step in that direction (wizard efficiency). I think it addresses the
need and still allows for checking and code entry, if necessary.

The point is that entering sail numbers is often desired to be very timely,
and of course accurate, so that streamlining the sail number wizard (or, at
least having a mode of the wizard that is streamlined) is most useful. In
some of our Regional and World events, we strive to update the event web
site with results only a minute or two after the last boat finishes. There
are enough issues with achieving this without having difficulty entering
sail numbers into the computer!

Thanks,
Ed

Hi Colin,
I used SailWave in Sundays Regatta in Falmouth Week, literally entering
yachts in as they crossed the line, on the committee boat. It worked very
well and we had the results in to the club house in a very short time. the
only time there was a problem was when a number of boats were approaching
the finish line in close succession. Not quite sure what the answer to that
is though, but maybe something along the lines that you are suggesting.

Assuming that the PC can be time synchronised it may be useful to be able to
set the finish time from the PC clock, maybe by pressing a function key as
they cross the line.

Regards,
Andy.

Hi Colin,

I have to agree with the masses.

I also enter the data from a paper sheet (in fact, we have 2 people writing the numbers down, in case of error), and it all goes directly into the wizard.

One thing I've noticed that _would_ be useful to have changed, is the behaviour of matching on exact sail #'s.

For Example:

I have boats with #'s 140, 14512, and 14. When I enter 14, it brings up all boats, and I have to "resolve ambiguity". It would be preferable to me to just be able to hit enter, and have it take the exact match.

Further to this line of thinking, I _always_ enter the full sail #, because it's more accurate. The "automatic matching" feature is actually a detriment to me, in this case. Not to mention the fact that it now makes noise.

My $0.02. (But it's Canadian money, so it's closer to £0.01)

Cheers,
Pat

That sounds great! It would allow easy insertion of times into a
spreadsheet next to the sail number or boat name. The results can then be
uploaded after the input is audited. The biggest difficulty for our club is
we have 4 or 5 people who can enter results, but their proficiency varies
depending on overall Sailwave experience, understanding of recent software
upgrades, and ability to enter results without errors.

This feature would not be useful to me as I enter results from a hand
written page. I find that electronics aren't such a good idea on our RC
pontoon boat and that a paper trail can be very useful for
resolving disputes.

I agree about having paper order-of-finish records. We do that in all cases
as well as often tape recording the finish call-outs so we have a live
record of the sometimes chaotic finish situation. That is a must
requirement.

But, when it is practical to ALSO enter sail numbers directly into Sailwave,
that is preferred for getting results onto the web site instantly. Either
the PC is on the RC boat or a cell phone or radio is held close to the
person calling out the finishes.

Ed

One thing I've noticed that _would_ be useful to have changed, is the
behaviour of matching on exact sail #'s.

For Example:

I have boats with #'s 140, 14512, and 14. When I enter 14, it brings up
all boats, and I have to "resolve ambiguity". It would be preferable to
me to just be able to hit enter, and have it take the exact match.

Further to this line of thinking, I _always_ enter the full sail #,
because it's more accurate. The "automatic matching" feature is
actually a detriment to me, in this case. Not to mention the fact that
it now makes noise.

I forgot about this "feature" and enthusiastically agree with Pat about not
requiring one to "resolve ambiguity" when, in fact, the sail number is
entered correctly and completely, e.g., "14". The way it works now really
slows down the sail number entry process.

Thanks,
Ed

I also like the idea of hitting enter when I get the exact number. Or if I am going to be getting
an ambiguous entry (multiple entries) that I can use the up and down arrows to choose which one I
want and press enter to accept the selected. Ideally, I would like not having to click into the
list window first, but have the arrows pertain to the list window. Maybe even have the text entry
change as I press down/up arrow to reflect what is being highlighted in the list box.

We take three rotations on the race committee boat. If you only take two
and they disagree you are not sure which rotation is right and which is
wrong. We will never go entirely electronic and will always stick with a
paper rotation. So the wizard works fine for us.

With the new start stuff explicitly defining start times and delineating
competitors in flights it would be safe. (apart from bugs introduced by

me).

In addition, we use a small tape recorder. We have found that handy when
multiple OOF sheets disagree. Even if two of the three agree, it does not
mean they are right. Tapes are cheap and stored with the OOF sheets in the
race records.

We take three rotations on the race committee boat. If you only take two
and they disagree you are not sure which rotation is right and which is
wrong. We will never go entirely electronic and will always stick with a
paper rotation. So the wizard works fine for us.

[sailwave] sail no wizard Hi Colin, I have to agree with the
masses. I also enter the data from a paper sheet (in fact,
we have 2 people writing the numbers down, in case of error),
and it all goes directly into the wizard. One thing I've
noticed that _would_ be useful to have changed, is the behaviour
of matching on exact sail #'s. For Example: I have boats with
#'s 140, 14512, and 14. When I enter 14, it brings up all
boats, and I have to "resolve ambiguity". It would be preferable
to me to just be able to hit enter, and have it take the exact
match. Further to this line of thinking, I _always_ enter the
full sail #, because it's more accurate. The "automatic
matching" feature is actually a detriment to me, in this case.
Not to mention the fact that it now makes noise. My $0.02.
(But it's Canadian money, so it's closer to 0.01) Cheers,

Hi Jay,

I find that electronics aren't such a good idea on our RC
pontoon boat and that a paper trail can be very useful for
resolving disputes.

I don't know if you read the uk.rec.sailing newsgroup, but there is a guy on
there who uses the handle "guy fawkes". He makes custom waterproof
computers with sailing in mind and according to himself, they are second to
none. Not cheap though. Can find web site if anybody is interested.

Hi Andy,

the
only time there was a problem was when a number of boats were approaching
the finish line in close succession. Not quite sure what the
answer to that
is though, but maybe something along the lines that you are suggesting.

Or perhaps some sort of jotting 'pad area' on the screen where you can type
stuff for information purposes only that is sticky across successive sail
number entries...?

Assuming that the PC can be time synchronised it may be useful to
be able to
set the finish time from the PC clock, maybe by pressing a function key as
they cross the line.

That is very easy for me to do as long as the user accepts responsibility
for getting the start times in the starts accurate. Even then there is the
possibility of adding another field to a start with is a generic offset
that applies to all boats, so that everybody can be synchronised after the
fact.

Colin

Just to "chew the fat" a little more, what is the sail no wizard were able
to preselect a number of boats by entering spaces between sail nos on the
input line. One could then double click on an entry to set its time.

Hi Pat,

I have boats with #'s 140, 14512, and 14. When I enter 14, it brings up
all boats, and I have to "resolve ambiguity". It would be preferable to
me to just be able to hit enter, and have it take the exact match.

I've done a tweak to avoid this. If the numbers entered thus far *exactly*
match some sail number(s) (usually number) then only that number(s) is shown
(as unique). If many sail numbers have that prefix but none match exactly,
the behaviour is as before and all are shown for resolution at that point.

Let me know if it's better like that or not.

It means that if you have sail numbers 1 11 111 and 1111 it'll ping 4 times
(and display *unique* 4 times) while entering 1111 - which in a way is
correct because each one is a valid sail number. The obvious extension here
is to inhibit the ping/*unique* if a competitor already has a result - but
that would have to be optional in case the results for race were being
enterted for the second time (the first time being in error for some
reason).

Hi Ed,

I forgot about this "feature" and enthusiastically agree with Pat
about not
requiring one to "resolve ambiguity" when, in fact, the sail number is
entered correctly and completely, e.g., "14". The way it works now really
slows down the sail number entry process.

Hi Malcolm,

As Mark said, you can do that now - import results as sailno+finish-time via
the import menus. The considered new tweak was to 'import' sailnos only
with their 'place' being impliclt. It would also work across flights with
multiple firsts etc as long as the starts had been set up correctly.

That sounds great! It would allow easy insertion of times into a
spreadsheet next to the sail number or boat name. The results can then be
uploaded after the input is audited. The biggest difficulty for
our club is
we have 4 or 5 people who can enter results, but their proficiency varies
depending on overall Sailwave experience, understanding of recent software
upgrades, and ability to enter results without errors.

The sail number wizard is obviously pretty useful, but you have
to enter the
sail numbers by hand one by one. Would it be a good option to allow the
sail numbers to be either entered one per line or pasted from an external
