Just used this for real for first time. I am finding that only sail
numbers that already have a result are being found by the sail number
result entry wizard.
Those boats which are in the file but are excluded because they have
no result as yet are not being found.
My usual way of setting up a new series is to pick up a previous
series, then zero all the results out, rescore and mark all as
excluded to start with. This has not previously resulted in the Sail
Number wizard not finding these. Setting "View" to show all (Ie, not
to exclude unsailed competitors) does not make any difference.
There must be some setting that has got itself changed in moving to
the new version and clearing out the old results. Question is, what???!

I agree with Chris that this will be a real pain because we start the
season with about 100 boats in our database and many don't join us
until after several races. When they start racing, there are often
several that come out at the same time. The way the wizard used to
work was a real convenience. I can live with Phil's suggestion
to "just un-exclude not scored boats" if there is an easy way to un-
exclude everyone but I can't find it and I don't want to un-exclude
them by hand when there might be 65 of them and I don't want to
search for them in the list.

There is a quick way to show all excluded competitors so that the Sail Number Wizard will then find the sail numbers
Click View on Menu bar then click, if there is a tick beside, Hide excluded competitors.
So that excluded competitors, i.e. those that have not sailed, are not shown in the results remember before scoring to use Edit | Mark all unsailed competitors as excluded.

Now further problem, if for ergonomy you selected “Hide fields unused by all competitors in the series”, and you need to re-exclude a competitor for other reason than having sailed no race in the series, the tick box “exclude” is also hidden in the EditCompetitor Window.
Happily, if not all entrered competitors have sailed at least one race, the box is displayed, and you can further exclude manually…

I was wrestling with this last week (see my post and Phil's reply).
I can't get Huw's method to work, but what I did discover is that if
you enter results by double clicking on the BOAT/RACE cell instead of
using the SAIL NUMBER WIZARD, excluded boats are automatically
included, and you don't have to enter the SAIL NO either.
Using the SN WIZARD you seem to have to double click on each boat
entered and untick the exclusion button on the entry screen that pops
up. You can do this during the race, so all boats are entered before
the results are input.
Doing it at home its much quicker not to use the SNW, but I wonder how
easy it is to scroll down to find the BOAT/CELL in the heat of battle,
rather than entering the SAIL NO in the SNW.

I agree there should be a tick box to display excluded competitors
in the sail number wizard.
Alternatively, have somewhere a menu item unexclude all...
Not perfect, but you can live with it... Use two copies.
Work on one with all competitors unexcluded by hand.
When the race is scored, save this copy
Then save as a "final copy", overwrite as necessary.

I
vote (if anyone cares about my vote) for the tick box that lets us do it the
way it used to work. All the workarounds are clumsy and time consuming
and the old way was, for us, somewhat elegant. We’ve been assuming
the change was actually a bug…

Those boats which are in the file but are excluded

My usual way of setting up a new series is to pick up a
previous
series, then zero all the results out, rescore and mark
all as
excluded to start with. This has not previously resulted
in the
Sail
Number wizard not finding these. Setting
“View” to show all (Ie,
not
to exclude unsailed competitors) does not make any
difference.
There must be some setting that has got itself changed
in moving
to
the new version and clearing out the old results.
Question is,
I had always assumed that the way it used to work was a bug, which had now been fixed! We have 1,200 boats in our Master Regatta, so having all 1,200 sail numbers popup in the sail number wizard was unworkable. From a procedure standpoint we exclude all boats until they have satisfied the Entry and Registration process, at which time we include them and their sail number becomes available to the sail number wizard.
A check box on the wizard, “show excluded boats”, which would determine if the wizard showed included boats only, or both included and excluded boats would work for us.
I vote (if anyone cares about my vote) for the tick box that lets us do it the way it used to work. All the workarounds are clumsy and time consuming and the old way was, for us, somewhat elegant. We’ve been assuming the change was actually a bug…

I agree with Chris that this will be a real pain because we start the
season with about 100 boats in our database and many don’t join us
until after several races. When they start racing, there are often
several that come out at the same time. The way the wizard used to
work was a real convenience. I can live with Phil’s suggestion
to “just un-exclude not scored boats” if there is an easy way to un-
exclude everyone but I can’t find it and I don’t want to un-exclude
them by hand when there might be 65 of them and I don’t want to
search for them in the list.

Just used this for real for first time. I am finding that only
sail
numbers that already have a result are being found by the sail
number
result entry wizard.
Those boats which are in the file but are excluded because they
have
no result as yet are not being found.
My usual way of setting up a new series is to pick up a previous
series, then zero all the results out, rescore and mark all as
excluded to start with. This has not previously resulted in the
Sail
Number wizard not finding these. Setting “View” to show all (Ie,
not
to exclude unsailed competitors) does not make any difference.
There must be some setting that has got itself changed in moving
to
the new version and clearing out the old results. Question is,
what???!
Subject: RE: [sailwave] Re: Sail Number wizard Not Finding Sail Numbers
I had always assumed that the way it ** used to** work was a bug, which had now been fixed!

Alternatively, have somewhere a menu item unexclude all…
Not perfect, but you can live with it… Use two copies.
Work on one with all competitors unexcluded by hand.
When the race is scored, save this copy
Then save as a “final copy”, overwrite as necessary.

Don’t make the SI to fit the software, but perhaps make the software to fit the RRS… If more SI followed the RRS this problem wouldn’t exist. Sailwave supports the RRS just fine.
Sailing is a big game. There is neither right or wrong to the rules. They are just the rules of the game and having lots of local rules does not help out the game.

If the scoring rules were correct rules in any case, they would have been a part of the RRS, not an appendix.
Scoring systems described in the appendix are perfect for high level, but don’t match the specificity of all classes, all venues, all levels of competition.
Tie breaking was changed several times by ISAF in the last editions of the RRS. We can assume that the present solution is not the best.
When an event with a single long race (“round the lake”) is developped to a two-days regatta with additional short races, it is legitimate to give the initial race moer importance than the others, hence my request. There is nothing wrong, no intention to make the scoring more complex…

We do exactly as you say at the Green Island Race on Lake Erie. 1st day is around the buoys, typically 3 to 5 races. 2nd day is a 24 mile race around Green Island and back. All races are scored the same and count the same. Any race is discardable. It seemed to be the best way to keep the game the same.
If the scoring rules were correct rules in any case, they would have been a part of the RRS, not an appendix.

V1.95 Build 6
Question is,
what???!
What could also be useful is to right-click in the column "Exclude" and choose "exclude" or "include"... instead of opening the whole competitor entry...

I vote (if anyone cares about my vote) for the tick box that lets us do it the way it used to work. All the workarounds are clumsy and time consuming and the old way was, for us, somewhat elegant. We’ve been assuming the change was actually a bug…
I tested Huw's method and it worked perfectly...
Just find the right field <excluded> and set as 0 (excluded=1 means the
competitor is excluded)

Doing it at home its much quicker not to use the SNW, but I wonder how
easy it is to scroll down to find the BOAT/CELL in the heat of battle,
rather than entering the SAIL NO in the SNW.

I agree there should be a tick box to display excluded competitors
in the sail number wizard.
Alternatively, have somewhere a menu item unexclude all…
Not perfect, but you can live with it… Use two copies.
Work on one with all competitors unexcluded by hand.
When the race is scored, save this copy
Then save as a “final copy”, overwrite as necessary.
Edit > Exclude unsailed competitors
View > Hide excluded competitors
Rescore
